The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Turned 32K on the Escape this morning. Filled up with corn this morning for 1.59/ gal thanks to Kroger fuel points. Wanted to redo my calculations of of E85 vs. 87. EPA estimates about 4-4.5 mpg difference between the 2. Using that mpg 87 would extend the range 70-78.75 miles per tank. Seems pretty accurate to the difference we are getting so far.

so is there any benefit of running ethanol to you?

This is in my wife's escape that is a FFV. I don't think the 6 would know what to do besides break.

It's been a while since I've had to do any equations like this but it looks like at today's prices; E85 $2.49, 87 $3.12; cost of e85 is about $.159/mile and cost of 87 is $.155/mile. Not a huge difference at a $.63/gal difference. It looks like $.71 is my break even point for price differential. Then of course there is the more frequent stopping at the pump. Wanted to see what the mpg is on this tank too to get more than a 1 tank mpg average.

Math teachers feel free to correct me.

Price of e85 (before fuel points, I would get the same discount on 87) - $2.49 * 17.5 of gallons the tank can hold = $43.575 so $43.58/tank
# of gallons the tank can hold - 17.5 * 15.6 avg mpg = 273 miles/tank

divide $43.58/273 = $.159/mile

on 87, avg mpg 20.1 * 17.5 = 352 miles/tank

let x equal the price difference between e85 & 87

so my equation is [($2.49+x) * 17.5] / 352 = (2.49 * 17.5)/273 -> [43.58 + 17.5x]/352=.159 -> 43.58 + 17.5x = 55.97 -> 17.5x = 12.39 -> x=.708 so $.71

This is with a 4.5 mpg difference, I have the mpg# written down at home and I feel like it's higher, but I also know the mpg # will normally be higher on e85. It won't be running in front of the valet stand at the hospital for this or future tanks.

* edit - as the price of e85 goes up, so does the break even point. i.e E85 @ $2.60/g has a break even point of $.76

made that equation way more complicated than it needed to be.

P = price of E85
x = price difference of 87 to break even
MPGc = mpg on E85
MPGg = mpg on 87

P+x/MPGg = P/MPGc

using what I paid:

1.599+x/20.1 = 1.599/15.6 -> 1.599+x/20.1 = .1025-> 1.599+x = 2.061 -> x = .462 so $.47 is break even. Difference at the pump was $.63 so E85 was cheaper.

Anything going on this weekend? Looks like I'll be back from MI late tomorrow night after dinner with NATOR Michigan.

My head hurts.

This one is easier to follow. You just need to know what your MPG is on 87 and on E85

Does anyone else think that on Top Gear USA, Tanner is the only one car manufacturers want/trust driving their cars. Even when Matt won the competition to drive the Rolls Royce Tanner still got to drive it.

I haven't watched it much recently but I either figured it was that or the other two had other commitments and all Tanner was doing is ricing up foci & feistas

I doubt the others have much to do. And I bet Tanner is just the best driver out of all of them. All Matt can do is a burn out and Rut is boring. People want to see stuff go fast and slide around, do stuff the common public cannot.

Vdubs now a days. At least in Global Rally cross.

Is that why Phen bought one? channeling his inner Tanner and switching to V-Dub for an auto-x car
