2002 mazda Protege 5
My name is Bryan, I am from Puerto Rico, And I drive a 2002 Yellow P5 std. I wanted to know how much Nitrous can the 2.0 withstand. I was thinking of doing50 or 60 shot just for fun on Fridays on the drag strip what you guys think, and what parts should I change for durability because this is my daily. (freak)

you better strengthen that engine before you do so.
i can bet you will blow your engine at the first 1 second of the shot of nitrous

There is one person on here that has successfully ran a 100 shot, but he also had a standalone to tune for it

Thanks for your answers, now, what parts do I have to upgrade, and what are my options with trans differential, I want a faster acceleration

It's your daily, don't do it. You'll end up with something you can't depend on.

Ok, delete nos idea, what a bout turbo, would it be better and more friendly for the baby soft 2.0 obviously adding low comp pistons and rods (hah)

Motors love boost even with stock internals. Rods are good for ~250 whp with a really good tune

Just seems like something about nitrous they don't like

Isnt the XR-S the Matrix with the 180-ish HP motor? I thought the Vibe only kept the standard 130ish motor like our proteges have (well 2.0's anyway).

Not sure, they're pretty heavy though my moms weighs 32xx with 120 lb driver which makes a pretty big difference

Ah i see. Weight is a big factor in that case. And i did read that the XRS in the first model year did have an 180 hp engine, while the newer one has only 158 so I guess in that case, it would be which would get left quicker?

the xrs is slow, i out ran one with a stock 2.0 with a k and n drop in filter. the p5 is light for a hatch and in manual trim has very good gearing for a daily driver that can be fun and ever so slightly fast. the xrs is not designed to be so. most are automatics it is tall and heavy.

Fast and stock protege should never be used in the same sentence. There is no getting around how slow they are. Pretty sure my 105 hp celicant will outrun a protege

Bryman turbos are better for these engines.though it may cost you more (depending), than nos. just like the guy with the sweet mustang pic above me said you want something fast dont use a protege.but keep in mind if youre building a hotrod thats exactly what you get.have a daily driver also. believe me walking sucks when something broke down while racing

if you want to boost your protege, the easiest way is to find someone selling a stock MSP setup and buy it off of them. Do a DIY intercooler setup from ebay and go from there. Just a fair warning, once you boost it, you will always want more. Be sure to invest in a set of gauges, boost and wideband air/fuel to be exact. As far as the transmission goes, you can never go wrong with a Mfactory LSD. If you plan to stay under 250whp, that would be all you would need really for a pretty quick and fun setup. But more importantly, tuning is where your power is going to come from. Most people here run with the SSAFC(Split Second Air/Fuel Controller). You don't gain any power with it, but you get a pretty smooth powerband.(this is when using a MSP ECU) But if you really want a solid tune and some good power, a standalone is what you want. Haltech Sprint 500 with a plug and play extension is what you want. Everything else is just daily upkeep/preventative maintenance.

i had a 2000 celica it was slower than this car is, maybe because it is because that celica wasnt stick shift but the p5 definitely feels lighter on its feet and handles as well or better, i upgraded plug wires and coils as well as the k&n on both cars but this car is decently quick for its on paper ratings, 10 less hp but better torque than celica and definitely a better power curve and better gearing. i out run last gen celicas left and right as well as the matrix and non si civics, never raced an si, but know id get beat, as the si is for sure faster. the subaru's are a definite dont race in these cars. but hell i cant complain i got the car off my dad for better mpg, it was his and we traded my nissan xterra in (bad mpg, but reliable) so he could get a new 2014 mazda 6, i got his p5.
