2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege
Hey guys, I would like to know how the Silvia t25 is in the mazdaspeed protege, is it the same as our oem turbo or does it spool faster, more reliable etc...
Please let me know!

It is similar but not the same, it has a journal bearing turbo which is less efficient and an older design than the dual ball bearing turbo the MSP has. The compressor housings are also different but can be made to work. Best way is to get another MSP turbo they are not hard to find.

Any info on where to get a brand new garrett t25?
I don't seem interested in buying a used one and have problems occur in a short while

If you can get the turbo off an S15 spec r go for it. Its dual ball-bearing and flows more than the stock turbo.

Yes there are a multitude of websites to order new Garret GT25 turbos from just search online. ATPturbo.com is a good vendor, although it will not be the cheapest you will know you are getting a genuine turbo.

I doubt it's a GT28 from an S15, it's almost always an S13 journal bearing T25.

Gt28 isn't that hard to come by, I have one that's the .86 ar, supposedly from the pulsar gtir

i'm currently running an sr20 t25. benefits are that they're cheap($80-$100), rebuildable, and easy to find. It does spool a little slower than the oem ball bearing msp t25, but i find that it doesnt make a huge difference since it's a small turbo.

The new turbo will likely outlast the car if it's a genuine Garrett/honeywell. My car is on the stock turbo and 11 years, 150k miles later it still boosts 10-12psi like it's nothing.

How long would a
Ball bearing turbo usually last?

Non china ball bearing turbos last 150k+ miles, non china journal bearings can last anywhere from 50-100k miles depending if it's water cooled, how hard it's pushed, maintenance etc. some will last longer. China journal bearing turbos last 10-30k miles. But look at the price differences garret ball bearing $1,000+ And 600-800 rebuild, garret journal bearing $600+ with rebuild kits $100-200 plus having them rebalanced. China journal bearing 150-300 with rebuild kits around 80-120 plus re balance.

Mileage and prices vary widely just depends on the abuse you put them through. What turbo you choose depends on what you're using the car for. If it's your daily and you want it as reliable as possible and plan on keeping it for 10 years go with a ball bearing, if you just want to replace it and get it back on the road and don't plan on keeping it long go journal bearing. If it's just a weekend toy that gets the s*** beat out of it Chinese is for you. I was going that route with my 323 till some kid sold me a garret gt28 that was rebuilt 30k miles ago for $150 because he didn't know what he had.
