One vehicle I tested and liked very much was the Tucson. After a test drive, I found it more responsive engine wise and handled better than the Rogue. In addition, I felt the interior was better laid out. In the end, I chose a CX5 Touring with Bose/sunroof package.

I had similar opinion, except it was the (Kia) Sportage that I liked which is very similar to Tucson.

I have seen the Rogue at the LA car show. It's a nice vehicle, but it can't be compared with our cars. Most likely the fun to drive factor it's not there either.
I haven't seen anything new about the CX5, except that new shifter.

I've just started my CUV search and I was looking through the specs on the new 2014 Rogue. One thing that is a deal breaker for me is the the towing capability of the Rogue. Rogue is 1000 lbs. CR-V and Rav-4 are 1500 lbs, and the CX-5 is 2000 lbs. Not that I need that much towing capacity, but it does show the relative strength of the engine/transmission.

Now I've got to decide if I want to wait for the 2015 CX-5 or not......

The towing limit in the UK for the 2L petrol CX-5 is 1800kg I believe, the diesel is 2000kg.

I wonder why there is such a huge difference?

Saw a Rogue in person yesterday and at the car show a few weeks ago. Not as aggressive looking as the CX-5, but looked very upscale and the interior looked like it was high quality/nicely designed.

The fact it comes with the around view monitor (which is awesome), better entertainment system, plus more cargo space and should be quieter/ride smoother compared to the CX-5 makes it pretty appealing to me. I still really enjoy my CX-5 but maybe in a few years it would be a nice replacement.

I did a quick test drive the other day.

I am not familiar with CVT, but it was not too bad. It certainly felt different and I am not sure if I would be happy in the long run. Acceleration was acceptable.
As expected, the car felt bigger and less nimble than CX-5 with a bit more vague steering feel.

I am not a fan of the exterior design but the interior looks OK and materials feel somewhat better than those in CX-5.

It is also cheaper. For example, the mid trim (equivalent of the Touring) costs the same, but includes Auto AC, Auto headlights, intelligent key, power lumbar, rear vents... Also, just for $1400 extra you can have a (better) navigation.

So I would say yes, a strong contender and a good choice for some people.

wife and I really considered a 2014 Santa Fe Sport and drove it several times. We were interested in the turbo (and would have bought a turbo CX-5 if one existed), so it's not really a fair comparison. Santa Fe is definitely bigger and you feel it when you drive. Not nearly as nimble as the CX-5. My wife was coming from a BMW 325i and the CX-5 felt the most similar to her car of all the crossovers in terms of handling.

I will say though, the Santa Fe has a very nice and expensive looking interior, IMO. Base engine is under-powered and the turbo with all the goodies was just too much $$. To get xenons, sunroof, navi, and a bunch of other stuff, you have to buy a $4k tech package. The Mazda felt like the much better bargain.
