2014 CX-5 180hp engine release date?

Eeeeewwwwhhhh... I have yet to see an attractively-styled Subie, but maybe someday....
Does Subie have any design studios in the US/southern California? If not it's about time they make that investment.

Yeah it's too bad that Subaru dropped the ball on the Forester redesign. The 2014 model will introduce a direct injection engine on the XT turbo but not on the lower trim levels. The front end of the XT is just ugly. The Forester is a great car and Subaru is on a roll with record sales. I've put over 2000 miles on my Dad's 2011 and am very impressed. I love the AWD system with the longitudinal engine and the handling is very good. But the boxy look and proportions needed a major upgrade and this is the best they could come up with? They could have knocked one out of the park. Meanwhile Mazda drops a 2.5 liter engine in the CX-5 and ups the anti in the class with a CUV that is good looking, offers great mileage and superior handling, and unlike the Escape, has not been recalled for catching on fire.

Spoke to my dealer yesterday, they say they expect to have the new ones at the end of February or early March.

I am seriously thinking of getting the 2014 GT with Tech Package....

I contacted a local Mazda dealer and asked if they would notify me when the 2014 CX-5 with 2.5L engine will be available and, don't choke on your lunch now, this is what they replied:
"they actually comes out in 2014"

With the extensive research that I do before purchasing a vehicle, I often know more about what I'm buying than the person I'm buying it from. I plan an forwarding the press releases form the LA Auto Show to this imbecile and enlighten them.

lol, talking to auto salespeople is usually not a good experience....

Follow up: After sending them all the press releases from the LA Auto Show stating that it would be available in January, this was their next comment:
"yes that is wrong, we would know when we have a new vehicle or when its expected to arrive"

Maybe this person is an ex-CIA operative and is sworn to secrecy....

One dealer I spoke to was ordering 2.5L vehicles in December that would show up 3 months or so thereafter. Another told me they were expecting already built 2.5L models the end of January.

It would be nice if Mazda had a pre-order program like Subaru does so I could configure the '14 2.5L CX-5 to my exact liking, get it ASAP, and save money in the process. It's looking like I'll just wait for the new Forester at this point since I get invoice price on the car and accessories by pre-ordering through them.

I'm new to Subarus - how can you preorder a 2014 subaru forester at invoice price? I'm in between the 14 forester and cx-5. This would help me out greatly. Thanks!

Pre-orders aren't available yet. This offer was available when the Impreza and Crosstrek were released, so I'm assuming (and hoping) that it will be available again. One has to put down a (I believe refundable) deposit, though. Likely $500. I don't know if it's specific to my dealerships out here in Colorado, but I have not been given reason to think that it will not be available again. I've heard that they'll start taking orders in February with the first ones coming in April/May, but we'll see if that timeline is accurate or not... (I'm hoping sooner) It'll be easier to get a better deal on a Forester than a 2.5L CX-5 IMO (with this pre-order offer).

Not to start a Subi bashing thread but IMHO, you really can't compare the 2 other than they both offer AWD. I've test drove both, the 2012 Forester & 2013 CX-5. Different tranny's, different road manners, new versus old styling, etc.

Best of luck whatever you guys decide & enjoy your new rides.

They are very direct competitors after the Forester's redesign. There's not much I like about the '13 Forester and older, inside and out, as far as I'm concerned. The '14 is a whole new ballgame :) It's between the '14 Forester and the 2.5L CX-5 for me, with a leaning toward the Forester (I'm otherwise neutral toward both brands). The 2.0L just did not cut it in any scenario that required acceleration up here at elevation :/

Also, thanks for the well-wishes ;)

Well, received info from another Mazda dealer and the news is brighter:

"I will let you know once the 2014 2.5L CX-5 comes out. They should arrive in the next couple of weeks"

2.5L option is $900 CDN

I have been monitoring this forum for months now, my wife and I have decided we are geting a CX 5, but won't be ready to purchase until March. We are waffling on whether to get a 2013 (possibly reduced once the 2014's are on the lot), or go with the extra HP. I visited the local Mazda dealer today, and was shown on the salesmen's computer that the add-on price for the 2.5L option is $900 CDN. Dealer has a black GT 2.5L with tech package 'on the boat' and will be at the dealership in 3 to 5 weeks. I originally was going for a metro grey GT, but he showed me that this color is being discontinued, replaced with meteor grey; looks more like a flat grey, still mica though. Oh well, perhaps a black 2014 GT is on the cards, looking forward to the test drive! The salesman also noted that a 2014 GX (2.0L) is 'on the train' and will arrive in 1 to 2 weeks. I am on the east coast of Canada, so I expect that our arrival times will be later than most.

Cheers

In USA, MSRP difference is only $600. Are they bundling different equipment into the 2.5L that would increase the cost that much more?

It's typical that cars in Canada cost a bit more- even for the same exact trim and options.

Ya, that is what my Mazda Dealer told me last week in Regina.
Approx $1000 extra for this years models (not final pricing yet)
And end of February or early March.

Does anyone know what, apart from the extra engine HP, is different in the 2014 CX5, please? Are there any fixes or improvements? F.

There are a few posts that detail this, but basically the 2.5 engine, improved infotainment software, and a laser that will automatically brake the care under 20 miles per hour if it detects something in front of you. I expect that people will test this by pulling into their garage. Also should help low speed rear ending accidents if you are distracted. There are two new colors, Soul Red Mica and Meteor Grey Mica, and two that were discontinued, Zeal Red, and Metropolitan Grey.

I can state that I definitely would have been happy with the car I test drove power wise, but with the modest penalty to fuel economy, and the other improvements, I am going to wait till the '14 comes out. Considering that I was first thinking about an RX350 or a Murano, both of which get abysmal mileage in comparison, I will still be ahead of the game.

Interesting to note is that as the 2.5L CX5 is about to hit our shores, we have not been made privy to any performance figures (not like this is going to be a pocket rocket anyway) as compared to the 2.0L. There can be 2 reasons and one of them I don't like at all:

#1 - Since there are still 2.0L sitting on dealers lots they don't want to publicize the tremendous increase in 0-60 times, etc.

#2 - Mazda is embarrassed at the insignificantly small increase in performance, given that they have been touting a 20% increase in HP & Torque.

I guess you've figured out I don't like reason #2.
