Looking for advice on a used car

2003 Mazda Protege5
So my girlfriend has decided that her 2003 Mazda Tribute is just too big and not suiting her needs. We're looking for something smaller for her, and "girly" (whistle)

She has a passion for VW beetles, but I've read very polarized reviews on them. Either people love them and they're reliable or they break down every other week. Her "dream car" is a Beetle convertible, but she would take a hatch as well.

So, in light of these reviews, I'm trying to look around and get some other (non-VW Beetle) ideas for her.
We're looking for something between $3000 and $5000, has the "cute girly" factor (or potential for it) and is reliable.

Suggestions?

Thanks! (2thumbs)

If she doesn't want to give up AWD being in mass, she could always go for an older scooby, like an impreza or impreza sport. There are plenty of them around, they are practically the state bird in mass!

He said "girly", Sean, not lesbiany. :p

hahaha yeah... my dad had a subaru for a while and it was dubbed the lesbian car. It was nice but just really... squishy

She's not super concerned with AWD, we don't have a huge amount of snow up here and when it does snow enough that driving is dangerous typically we don't have any reason to drive anywhere
