alright - here goes. KL-P5-take2

after driving it a few miles now:

man....that 5th gear is shorrrrrrt! I"m still tappin like.....3-4K at 70'ish. I thought it'd be a little better than that.......kills any chance of decent mileage. But......on the other hand - I'm sure it's nice with a snail.....as it'll stay spooled for any "unsuspecting" victims....... :)

drove it to work this morning - drove like a dream. That sound of the v6 out back sure is nice!

Question though - I'm still searching for the cause of my heating system not changing modes (defrost to vent to floor to etc) and not changing temps (stays at a constant cool temp right now). Looking at the vacuum drawings from the Service Manual - no leads to vacuum feeding the system......unless I missed something!

They are cable driven on the protege. one cable connects to a flapper right above the driver side pedal and the other connects behind the glove box to the left.

The A/C cooler thingy comes off easily with 2 10mm bolts after you've taken out the glove box surround. From there you have tons of room for getting to the heater core/fan etc.

And what tranny are you using lol? 70mph @ 3k is the norm unfortunately, though I'm told that both the FS-DE and the KLs are most efficient at that RPM...

How does the white part to the left and black on the right comes out? Do you know?

Anyways looking good!!!

Using the G25M-R from a 1994 Probe GT. It rips at 70! I took it out for a spin lastnight - and I'll be damned......it went all the way to the fuelcut in 5th. Couldn't go any faster....period. Dunno what I topped out at, and didn't want to hold it there for too long (suspension needs some lovin). ...twas' flyin though!

I always thought these cars could use another gear at highway speeds though. A friend of mine had a 1996 PGT, and it was fun - but it just needed another gear.

Videos to come!

grrr......after the ripping and roaring - I've sprung a healthy exhaust leak! It's smells wayyyyyy bad in the cab, and sounds like utter poo.

Time to bust out some good ol' redneck engineerin'.....and finger out a way to get the y-pipe collector to stop moving around like it's got muffler bearings. Could be the fact that I haven't finished nor installed the hangers that go on the y-pipe at all yet.....it's just hangin there....lol.

Update:

Officially put a buncha miles on my new setup now. It's been running quite well, and hasn't left me stranded thus far. This motor just looooooooves to sing! Plus, doing the ATX > MTX swap .... that was the best mod thus far to the car - no doubts. Now that it's starting to warm up - I have to get this damn A/C working though. I had to wait until after dark lastnight to take my kiddos to their mother's house, because it was too hot for my daughter. Any suggestions for this? The P5 lines will NOT connect directly to the KL compressor - no questions asked. The aluminum fittings aren't the same sizes between the KL's female connections and the P5's male lines.

I have a few plans on the horizon, mostly to do with bodywork, a subtle bodykit, some cambering to fix my minor rubbing in the back and sit it a little more flush, paint (this one I'm excited about), interior rework (seats, audio, dash, gaugepod), and after that's all finished up - boost. I want to wait for the boost, until the rest of it is pretty much done - just for reliability-sakes. But I've sourced some parts, looking at spending around 1k, and it will center around a Super60 snail (or something comparable), FMU, 929 Injectors, custom piping, some intake manifold mods (Vris delete, some port matching, etc) some sort of piggyback for the ECU - because I don't want to lose the ECU as it works and performs just fine - just need some additional fuel, timing, and spark management.

Glad to hear everything is running well, mate. It's funny how all the KL P5's are going to boost now. :)

There must be something in the kool-aid that y'all are drinking... (drunk)(thumb)

I also had an issue last week in which the thing just wouldn't pull beyond the "insert VRIS RPM changeover range here" point. Come to find out - the little c-clips that secure the rods from the vaccum actuators onto the actual butterfly valves - both had come off. Just to verify - I safetywired the VRIS butterflies open and went for a drive - I'm guessing that one of them has been acting up for awhile - because with both wired open:

I do lose a little uumph on the low-end torque, but once it spins up.....holy crap it comes alive! Sure surprised some poor fool lastnight in a late 80's camaro (kept nudging me, and I kept declining....until like the 4th time). I gave him the hit, downshifted to 4th at somewhere around 70, went till it limited, then banged 5th - I had quite a lead on him. Felt great to pull that one off!

for the a/c im going to start a catalog
to identify the a/c compressors they have a number on the bottom of the bracket so if you are under the car and its connecter you can read it ill post pics up later
i have N24 and N48 i believe im not home yet

ive wanted to turbo my kl the whole time, my fsde had a turbo when it crapped out... stupid valves

ive learned my lesson though, if i think im going to blow my engine im going to do it well over 100mph instead of 50 mph not even spooling my turbo

yeah - AC is a must down here to actually find the car usable during the summer, especially for a DD.

I don't care if I have to make some strange connections - I will get it working. I'm thinking about heading to the JY and pulling the PGT's AC lines for comparison-sake. Then if I need to - having a custom set of lines made with the correct-sized fittings on each end.

i had a p5 line cut in half and connected to a 626 line, but it leaks.
There is a company in mckinney tx that will custom make the lines but they never gave me a quote so im thinking it will probably be 350+ just for the lines.
they are basically hydralic lines which thousands of places can make but most places wont even attempt it

kl lines will not hook up to the p5
the line to the firewall screws on if you can adapt that ill be amazed
and the other one runs somewhere funny i can't remember but its different

I still have my P5 lines in place, and down by the KL compressor. If I can get the inside diameter of both the attachments milled down just a smidge - they'll work. Hell...they'll even bolt up. I'm sticking with the whole "use what ya got" theory, until I've either made it work, or proven it just flat out will not work.

you will have to shave down your p5 lines and/or bore out your kl compressor, i've done both and they never sealed correctly
then i spliced the lines together and they leaked so im going to work my ass of trying to see if it is possible to find a kl compressor that bolts right up

I don't see why you can't get a shop to cut your P5 fittings off and crimp on the 626 fittings and be done with it.

they dont seal to well, ive had this conversation with a 60 year old guy who has been making hoses for years
back in the old days they could just cut your fittings off and throw them on a new line or make your a brand new line however no one really does this and the fittings are s*** these days, they dont seal and if they do they dont last more than a year
the connectors used to be barbed on the inside so if the outside didnt seal the inside would, nowadays the inside is smooth and the outside has to seal and stayed seal
