I just recently switch to Mobil 1 syntheic 5w-30 with oem oil filter. I check the forum people said mazdaspeed3 used about 6qts of oil. But, when I check the dip stick it seem to be above the high level. Will this effect my car by having too much oil?

You should not over fill your oil; it causes your engine to labour more than it will when the oil is at the proper level. As for what kind of oil? Some of the guys I run with use Rotella T (5w40 I believe), and some use German Castrol 0w30.

Rotella T is probably some of the better oil to use. Mobil 1 has an issue with fuel dilution due to the extremely high fuel pressures. Honestly, I just use an AC Delco filter... because I work for AC Delco and they're cheap.

So you guys think I should switch to another oil brand on my next oil change? I was thinking of castrol or pennzoil with stock filter again.

there are some pretty serious oil discussions out there, a lot on how most brands claim to be "synthetic" but arent true synthetic. A few off the top of my head which are the good ones are like Red Line, Royal Purple. RP is more expensive than most oils in the store, but I know its well worth it for a car you really love. Like an MS3, id suggest it over crap like pennzoil or castrol

Truth be known, a lot of guys spend way too much on oil and obscess way to much about it. Any oil from a major brand that meets or exceeds the specification for weight and service duty as set forth in Mazda's owners manual will provide the protection needed to assure that the engine will never have an oil related failure provided:

(1) the owner changes the oil faithfully at or before each scheduled service interval

and

(2) the owner uses a high quality oil filter with each change

Personally, however, I do think that synthetics provide additional protection in turbocharged engines because they do not "coke" or produce solid residues from the extreme high temperatures associated with the oil lines that pass through the turbo center housing. Those temps can reach or sometimes exceed 1500 degrees F., and conventional (dino-based) oils do not hold up as well or for as long under those operating conditions, especially if you drive your car like a horse that has been "rode hard and put away wet."

I use Mobil 1 Synthetic. I DO NOT find it to be a cause of fuel dilution, comparing my oil tests with others on this board who are using other oils. I'm not advocating Mobile 1 as "better" than other well-known synthetics. It's just that I've used it successfully for many years in a number of turbocharged applications (high boost modded Saabs and Volvos in particular, going back to at least 1984) and have never experienced any sort of engine oil related issue.

One last thing. Avoid "racing" formulas, whether conventional or synthetic or blend. Such oils may provide arguably better lubrication, but deliberately do not contain many of the additives used in oils on daily driven vehicles. Those racing oils are intended to be drained and changed after each and every race. They do not hold up well except for short periods of competition use.

Conclusion. Consider any good synthetic from a recognized name-brand national manufacturer with the correct specifications per Mazda, for superior "anti-coking," which may extend the life of the turbo, but any good oil that meets Mazda's specifications will protect this engine itself. Beyond that, use your favorite label within those parameters, with full confidence that your engine will not be harmed.

I'm not an expert on this subject but everybody comes to conclusions eventually after reading enough posts on this subject and doing some other research.
You really want to waste some time immersing yourself in oil lingo, and learning about oil?

I've used Mobil 1 synthetic as well as Castrol synthetic in this car for the same reasons mentioned by MSMS3. I don't change it myself, but I have it done at a shop that does all manner of work on all types of cars. They also build domestic V8 racing engines as well as other high performance motors. I have also seen a few turbo Honda engines in their shop. They work on just about anything high performance, or not.

The owner agrees with the use synthetic in my "rice burner" for the same reasons of high oil temperatures around the turbo and better resistance to the oil coking in the return lines. It's better protection from that standpoint and worth the extra cost over conventional. Otherwise he is a conventional oil proponent all the way.

Royal Purple and Red Line are great oils, but not better enough than Mobil 1, Castrol, Penzoil, or other full synthetics for the additional cost in my opinion. The law of diminishing returns applies. It's your money and you can do whatever you want, but it might be worth the time to learn the differences in what you're buying and whether or not it's going to make a lick of difference in your application for the significantly higher costs involved.

i've alwasy heard that mobil1 is not fully synthetic or something now? but yeah anyways i use pennzoil ultra 5w20. and make sure not to over fill your oil cuz that shiet will start smoking bad. i know from experience.~!

I hope you meant to say 5W30!!

RP 5w-30 with a NAPA gold filter. I don't like the filters with the cloth gaskets.

When I fill, I put 5 in and check it after half the 6th quart is in.

I'd be curious how much HP and mileage is impacted by running the 40 weight in his locale VS the factory spec viscosity.
I suppose in the highest heat of summer, not much if anything but who knows.

Probably not enough to measure.
