So my wife and I were walking out of Home Depot this weekend and found a man wrestling a pair of toddlers into booster seats in the Explorer parked next to us. Upon getting closer, we noticed his door was firmly planted into mine and bouncing up and down with the kids. He left a quarter-sized dent in my rear passenger door and some deep scratches to match. They doesn't look like they made it through the clear coat.

My wife called him out on this fact. I might add, being on the receiving end of her wrath more than once, I was quite amused. The man was very apologetic and gave me his email address and phone number. He said to take it somewhere to have it buffed out and send him the bill. As he was driving away, I took pictures and wrote down his license plate number just to be safe.

I'm trying to figure out how to proceed:

  • Do I take it to a body shop and hope they can buff it out? Keep in mind that there is also a fairly shallow but noticeable dent which goes along with the scratches.
  • Do I get my insurance involved? The guy was pretty nice about it. I dont want to unleash the sharks on him unless absolutely necessary.
  • Do I just ignore it and let my baby drive around wounded?
  • Is there some new body shop technology that can actually get out pockmarked dents without necessitating new paint?

Addionally,

Can somebody recommend a good body shop in the Northern Virginia/Tyson's Corner area?

It's called PDR, and a good PDR guy can take it out fairly flawlessly. If you're concerned about what your insurance will do consult them first, usually they don't really care where you take it, just how much it's appraised at (since that's all they're going to pay anyway). Take it to one of your insurance agency's approved shop lists, so in the case that the man doesn't pay, the insurance agency should pay you back the full amount.

I'll second the recommendation for a PDR repair. No need to paint and fix when it's a quicker, more convenient solution to get that popped out. If the scratches didn't get through the clear coat, a buffing with some scratch remover or light cutting compound should get rid of them.

I'm in the same boat as you with two small dings on the front pass. door, but haven't got around to getting them popped out yet. Quote for both was less than my $250 comprehensive deductible, so it's very reasonable.

We have one already in our brand new 3. If you find a good PDR place in the area, let me know where it is and how much they charged.

Thanks (2thumbs)

100% agree on finding a PDR place...

as for opinions on how to handle it... for sure do not involve insurance unless he refuses to pay.
for now, keep all valid pics, documentations together, then send him copies with the copy of the bill and wait for him to send a check. send a letter with it thanking him for being nice and fair in this situation...

After all that if he refuses, you have PLENTY of proof to get insurance to gouge him with.
but he sounds nice enough since he also gave all his info, i wouldnt worry.

The pic you posted is really hard to see, if possible, take one from the side to show the depth and reflection of scratches. I'd bet that's under a $200 fix.

PDR quoted $135 to take care of it. Going in on Friday. The guy agreed to cut me a check.

Thanks for the input

I got two taken out of my MS6 - $60 each. Worth it considering how much of an eyesore they were on that Black Cherry paint.
