ipod problem

:
Mazda Mazdaspeed3
so i have a 2008 mazdaspeed 3 gt. i bought the ipod intergration modual in order to get a better sound out of my ipod. i pluged it in and nothing happened the ipod sees it but the head unit will not play anything. i took it back told them what happened and they got me a differant part number. i was then told that i had to buy an $80 harness. i told them to shuve it and went on line to the rpm store and got an ipod modual form them. same problem. i need help with this its bugging the hell out of me.

I can't offer any solutions, but just as some questions I would ask if I was trying to help you troubleshoot this.

First, what are the part numbers you were given at each stage of this quest?

Second, what generation iPod are you using, and have you verified that that generation iPod is compatible with the connector you are using, and/or with the stock head unit?

Third, I don't use an iPod, but when I plug my Zune or Crackberry into the AUX port, I have to select the "Media" input on the head unit in order to hear the signal from them. Does the iPod module also require you to switch to "media," and are you doing so?

If you can't get any of the iPod-specific hardware to work, a $5 patch cable from Radio Shack will always connect to the AUX port. Just get a ground loop isolator is you plan to plug the iPod into the 12v connector next to the AUX port unless you like to "hum" along with the tunes. Of course, this won't get you steering wheel controls for the iPod, but it sounds a helluva lot better than most FM transmitters.

With both the OEM and audiolink modules you need to push CD twice to access the module. Were you doing that?

I second Bill's question about what part numbers you were given. Also do you have a '08 model or an '08.5?........ when was you car built?

Buy a $15 aux cable. Thats what I did. Audio is good enough for me at least.

i cant seem to fine the papers that i had the part numbers on.

i did press cd twice and still nothing i tried pressing everything on the headunit more than once i tried holding it down. i just couldnt figure it out. i went to the mazda dealer and asked the tech that puts them in what the deal was. he told me that there were 2 part numbers. i have a march 2008 model. i got the second part that he told me to put in and i did. after buying the $80 harness still nothing. i sent an email to mazda corp asking and they just told me that alot of people have been having this issue, and to go on the internet and get an aftermarket one.

i got the XCarLink iPod Integration Kit form the rpm store online and i hooked it up. still nothing, i returned it.

i do use the aux cable for now but i would like to controle the ipod form the head unit and have it charge during as well.

I know no one has addressed it yet.... but who performed the installation? Did you have Mazda do it, or did you do it yourself? Can you verify that you're plugging the connector into the right spot? (you'd be amazed at the s*** I see working computers, like USB cables crammed into phone jacks on the back of all-in-one printers/fax/scanners)

Also have you tried pressing the "SAT" button.... I know that aftermarket ones like the XCarLink require you to press CD until you see "EX 1" on the lcd display... but I thought the Mazda model "oem" one required one to press the "SAT" button to change? Try pressing the CD or the SAT buttons just once instead of twice... see if you get the "EX" on the display.

i installed it my self and yes i installed it correct. i have done this at my work more times than i care to rember. i pressed every selector button on the headunit one time and twice and held them down. i have the audio jack for my ipod now but i want to change it form the headunit and have it charge it.

Design i think you are correct about the part numbers, i would just like to find out from someone that has it in and it works. the numbers look right.

I ended up getting a GROM Audio MAZI2 from eBay. It charges my itouch 2nd gen (and iphones as I tested a friend's). The numbers that Design gave... do your parts have those same numbers? If you can check to make sure that would help further.

when i saw those ipod car integration things i though they were kinda expensive. So i just got a cheap AUX cable and a generic mount that fits anything.

$90 with free shipping isn't all that expensive in my book, considering what it does for you allowing you to control it from your steering wheel.

What app is that, the one in your pic that shows the lateral G's? I'd like to download it.

that is cool that you can do that. so i guess its pretty much about how much are u willing to pay for convenience( and safety cuz u don't have to look at the ipod and take ur eyes of the road) .

and the app is called " Track Day " it cost $11.99
or free if u got a hacked iphone/ipod (shady)

YAY free (naughty)

Cool thanks man, I'm gonna search for it for my jailbroken itouch.... i ended up getting something called pocket dyno.... it's ok but i wanted to check out that one because i liked the layout in the image on your itouch.

But yeah, it allows you to control the itouch from the steering wheel and dashboard, and still allows you to control it from the itouch as well.

The $90 I've seen from GROM Audio is actually the cheapest I've seen with all the others out there, like x-link, or neo, or the ice one.

haha nice. horray for hacking (headbang).

not only does it do conering g but it also does accelerator g and braking G meter... also lap timer and a measure performance thing. But for the measure performance. Make sure to calibrate it when stopped at a flat surface and the ipod vertical and in a fixed position to get more accurate readings.

I realise it's been a while since the OP posted in here.... apparently I thought I'd responded to his last post.

OP, you have a '08.5 model. On '08.5-'09 models only the OEM module will work. None of the aftermarket ipod modules will due to a connector/pin change on the HU for those two years.

You do need the harness/install kit. Also you need to tap two wires going to the LCD.

Can I ask you about the validity in that? Where did you get the info from? From the context of his first post it seems that he did indeed have the Mazda one, and that after it didn't work Mazda had told him he needed an $80 wiring harness, and that's when he said fk off, and went online to buy the one from therpmstore.com.

So I'm just curious about where you got the info from... it's always nice to get new sources for data.

It is correct. 08.5 and up with MP3 capabilities are not compatible with older protocol.
I guess integrators will make something for it shortly...

Starting with 2008.5 models, Mazda went with a different HU. It can be identified by its piano black exterior and MP3 logo. The harness connection behind the HU is different. Hence, aftermarket units will not work with 08.5-09. That has been validated by several members through simple trial and error.

Without further info from the OP, we can only speculate what happened. However, based on the comment below, I think he got an 04-08 integration module with an 08.5-09 harness. He'll need to post the following in order for us to help him:
1. Whether his car has the piano black interior
2. Part # of the OEM integration module
3. Part # of the OEM harness

Here's his comment for reference:

Ah, ok... thanks for explaining that to me, I was wondering where that info came from. So for whatever reason from 07-08 Mazda just designed to change the 08.5-09 headunits.... strange.

Yeah I try to not make a habit of spouting off incorrect information. As to where I got the information for it, that would be from bagman1 our forum sponsor from onlinemazdaparts.com. It could also have something to do with the multiple audio input threads I compiled on several forums over the past four years.

Mazda has actually changed manufacturers for the HU's 2-3 times..... So far I believe there have been Panasonic, Sanyo and Clarion HU's before the '08.5 refresh. Why they decided to change not only the manufacturer but the protocol and harness connections I can't speak to.

Design,

We already know the OP has a '08.5 model as he stated he had a 03/08 build date. '08.5 models were those produced after 01/08. It definitely sounds like he tried using an '04-'08 module with a '08.5 harness.
