2003 mazda protege
hey guys,

well i finally blew the motor in my 2003 protege lx, and i've decided that i'm done with the FS-DE. so why not go KLZE, right? i got real lucky and found an mx-3 with a fresh KLZE install (less than 500 miles). It's got a clutch masters kevlar clutch, resurfaced mx-3 FW, stainless headers, magnaflow high flow cat and muffler, 17x7 rims with new tires (and the correct 4x114.3 bolt pattern and 45 mm offset... and they'll actually look good on my car), and a bunch of other goodies that will transfer over to the protege. i got all of that for $1325. :D needless to say, i'm quite happy with the purchase. here is the car i bought, click here. looks like it'll need a little work to get it from NC to OH, but i don't mind that. worst case scenario, i'll have it shipped for $400.

over the next few months, i'll be posting a lot of pics in this thread. i'd like to make this the thread to come to for the KLZE swap.

but first, i'd like to start off with asking for advice... those of you who have done the swap, and words of wisdom?

Not too many people on here have attempted/complete the task, but im in the process. You will need a few other minor things, most of which u will have with your donor car. now as far as those wheels you do know the protege is either 4x100 or 5x114.3 not 4x114.3. You will need a dakota digital universal tach interface so your stock tach will read correctly due to the change in number of cylinders. also its a butt load of wiring, with your price of the car so cheap i'd be scared that something is wrong with the motor, i would look it over well before putting it into the protege.

actually, you are correct on the rims... but the rims it comes with are the universal 4 lug pattern.

but i completely agree with you, and the plan is to get the engine running in the mx-3 before transplanting it into the protege. this way, if i do screw something up on the install, im not compounding a pre-existing issue with the motor.

iukekini, did you ever get a new shell for your build?

check the thread, i just posted pics in the second post and on the last page of the new beast, lol its Slotege v1.8 hehe but yes i have a new car for the swap but im doing a complete rebuild on the motor now. might look into better internals as well.

Sounds good about getting it running in the mx3 first very good plan.

That's pretty badass man, i'm super stoked to finally buy a KLZE and install it in my MX6 - it's so much more of a powerful engine than my KLDE, which i'm still satisfied with, I just want more power and the only way up is with a KLZE. I also have found a bunch of turbo kits I could install on my DE, and it will allow me to use stock internals and I would probably wanna of course get an stage 2 flywheel and clutch, and it would produce roughly 250hp. But with a ZE and a turbo I could ideally reach 300+hp.

Anyways get some pics of your new engine/car/donor car.(stoned)

yea, from everything ive read, the v6 mx6/pgt guys love to do this swap... the obd1 guys literally just drop it in. i think ill be satisfied with the power gains for now, but a small turbo might be a possibility in the future. :-)
