Thinking About a Mazda Protege5

A friend of mine has a Mazda Protege 5 that he wants to sell me. It's a 2002 Mazda Protege 5 with 220K on it. He says it will need brakes, water pump and tires. Exterior and interior looks good, no rips or tears on the seats or anything, no dents or rust from what i believe. What would you pay for it? Also what are some common issues with the Mazda P5, this will be my first Mazda if i buy it.

With that miles I wouldn't pay more than $2500 but I could be being a cheap ass. And that is assuming the rest of the car meets my standards.

If he says it will need a water pump you might as well do timing belt, tensioner, idler pulley, and front main seal while you are down there. At one time I paid $750 to do this (along with all fluids being flushed) you can get away doing it yourself for a few hundred.

Brakes will be a under $200 if you do it yourself. Tires can be replaced for about $300 installed if you order online.

If you add all that up you may be able to find one with less miles and more recent maintenance and come out ahead.

Ok, are these cars pretty reliable? If maintenance is done on a regular basis can i see some good miles from it?

The mileage is very high. Keep looking.

+1

Not saying that these cars won't last because there are members on here over 200K and running strong. But after putting all the money you'll need to put into it, you can get one with less mileage and probably need less work. It depends on how much your friend wants.

If the car was kept up like it should have been... 220 wouldn't be bad but I can assure you all those parts didn't start to go at the same time and he kept driving it.. 220 is a lot for any car and I feel you would be buying his problems..
I would not recommend the purchase if he wants more than a couple K

He's selling it to me for $1,000, and i know the timing belt has been done with in the last year.

For 1k, I would buy it and that's only if it has no facial problems or rust cancer as you said. Is a manuel or auto? Also is it a clean title car? That will help the rest of us decide the value.

No Rust, Clear title and it's a manual. it looks pretty loaded, has a sun roof and stuff.

Oo, and I always thought mine had a lot of miles on it 135K. It is now my DD about 50 miles a day. Timing belt and the Bloody A/C, and passenger window switch has really been the only things wrong with mine. May want to look at some "tougher" rims. I've blown through 3 OEM ones from some potholes before I decided to get some aftermarket.

UPDATE
Look what was delivered today. :)

So after thinking it over and doing some research on the forum i decided to go ahead and get it. Also i did some hardcore negotiating, basically got the car for $500 and a Xbox. :)

that car looks great for 500$ and an xbox. youll have more fun with the car than the xbox any way. welcome to the protege family!
