I have an 2009 CX9. 3.7litre. I now have 3600 miles on it. I want to do my own oil change. How many quarts of 5w20 do I use. And do I use synthetic oil. Don't know what is in car. And is there a oil reset.
No offense but how do you do your own oil change when you can't read the owners manual for what type of oil and how much to use?
Scary (nailbyt)(nailbyt)
and who wants to change their own oil today? quicky lube mart for 20 bucks or the dealer for 39 bucks. Either case you do not get dirty, don't have to get rid of the used oil, don't have to worry about how much and what kind of oil to use and you can send your better half to do it and wait around for it to be done.
I do my own oil change not because of the money. I do it because I know I'll do it right. Besides what else do I have to do on a Friday night or Sat/Sun morning? With full synthetic, I only do it around 8k miles anyway. So, that's like twice a year for me. Well, though I do have to do it for 3 vehicles
My hands only get dirty on one of the car but that's due to the stupid placement of where the filter is. But on the CX-9, it is right there. Unless you are a bigger guy, you can crawl under w/o jacks.
I collect all the oil in a tub which I tend re-cycle at the local parts store, maybe twice a year.
How much and what kind of oil is the most important part. Don't you want to know what oil is put into the engine, and how much? Too much is actually harmful to the engine.

LOL. You just have to train the punks that you will make them cry if something is not exactly how you want it. It does take time but worth it over time.I absolutely agree. I have heard or experienced far too many oil change mistakes from shops to ever let someone else do it.
It's too easy not too, but VERY easy to destroy the engine if done sloppily. (One friend had the vehicle returned to him with NO oil in it.)
I will also do my own brake work, since that's pretty easy too. On my truck I work on most of it, including the clutch, timing chain, etc.
As far as more complex systems, like the CX9, then I let the dealer work on it, since that's usually going to be warranty work anyway. Then if they screw it up, they are liable.
Why let Johnny Lube blow up my engine, though, because he was too busy talking to his girlfriend on the phone to pay attention? Oh, and I DON'T need a new air filter, dammit.
It's not worth it though. It costs twice as much than doing it myself, and then I can never know if they did it right. So, I'm paying extra for doubt.
I'm just not afraid to get my hands a little dirty and do things for myself.
It takes 30 minutes to do at home and I can spend 10 of those doing something else while the oil drains completely. So how long does it take to drive to the oil change place, wait for the work to get done, try to get out and pay while they are harassing you to do 5 other unnecessary services and drive home, Mr. My Time is Too Valuable?
