Oil Change

I have an 2009 CX9. 3.7litre. I now have 3600 miles on it. I want to do my own oil change. How many quarts of 5w20 do I use. And do I use synthetic oil. Don't know what is in car. And is there a oil reset.

Is there a service reminder on CX9? If there was one, I haven't seen it yet. I am guessing there is no need to reset anything.
Synthetic oil. I would wait until the OE warranry runs out unless one really wants to baby the CX9. Lots of discussion on this subject. From factory, CX9 does not contain synthetic oil. It does requires service interval of 5,000-7500 miles no matter what oil you use.

How much oil? It should be in the owner's manual. I have to look it up.
You can, too.

Hello MYCX9,
Since we have the same model 3.7L, here,s what I've got from Mazda CX-9 Owner's Manual:
With oil filter replacement = 5.2L (5.5 US qt, 4.6 Imp qt)
Without oil filter replacement = 4.7L (5.0 US qt, 4.1 Imp qt)

Seems to be no different with 3.5L requirement!

No offense but how do you do your own oil change when you can't read the owners manual for what type of oil and how much to use?
Scary (nailbyt)(nailbyt)

It never ceases to amaze. Can't RTM and can't search the forum. Every car I have ever owned gives the quantity of oil needed for an oil change in the owners manual. Every one has also given oil grade, viscosity and oil change interval recommendations. WOW, so does the CX-9's manual!!! There's a whole bunch of other useful information in there too!!!

and who wants to change their own oil today? quicky lube mart for 20 bucks or the dealer for 39 bucks. Either case you do not get dirty, don't have to get rid of the used oil, don't have to worry about how much and what kind of oil to use and you can send your better half to do it and wait around for it to be done.

I do my own oil change not because of the money. I do it because I know I'll do it right. Besides what else do I have to do on a Friday night or Sat/Sun morning? With full synthetic, I only do it around 8k miles anyway. So, that's like twice a year for me. Well, though I do have to do it for 3 vehicles :P

My hands only get dirty on one of the car but that's due to the stupid placement of where the filter is. But on the CX-9, it is right there. Unless you are a bigger guy, you can crawl under w/o jacks.

I collect all the oil in a tub which I tend re-cycle at the local parts store, maybe twice a year.

How much and what kind of oil is the most important part. Don't you want to know what oil is put into the engine, and how much? Too much is actually harmful to the engine.

If you go to Mazdausa.com then MyMazda, you can find coupon of maintenance that you can use at all Mazda dealers. I found $30 oil change + 27-points inspection there several times. Or, you can visit your local dealers' website for maintenance specials. Lots of times, my local dealers have $28 oil change deals. You can't beat that price
- 5.5qt -> 6qt x $3 = $18
- filter -> $5
- etc.
The parts alone cost $23+

$5-$7 for your labor.

I know some people enjoy DIY. In that case, money is non-issue.
Have fun.

what do you do when you need brakes or transmission or engine work? You have to trust someone to do it other then yourself. I am sure even the goofiest dealer knows how much to install but hey, whatever floats your boat.

as for me, I gave up on doing it myself years and years ago and I was an ASE Master Tech. I ain't getting on my back or worrying about disposal. I have enough to do on my house without worrying about an oil change being done by myself.

I will tell you I check it before I leave the dealer and if they do hose the install of the oil, they get the bird and I am off to find another dealer unless the owner listens to what I have to say.

I absolutely agree. I have heard or experienced far too many oil change mistakes from shops to ever let someone else do it.

It's too easy not too, but VERY easy to destroy the engine if done sloppily. (One friend had the vehicle returned to him with NO oil in it.)

I will also do my own brake work, since that's pretty easy too. On my truck I work on most of it, including the clutch, timing chain, etc.

As far as more complex systems, like the CX9, then I let the dealer work on it, since that's usually going to be warranty work anyway. Then if they screw it up, they are liable.

Why let Johnny Lube blow up my engine, though, because he was too busy talking to his girlfriend on the phone to pay attention? Oh, and I DON'T need a new air filter, dammit.

I'm with you on this. I also bring my own oil and filter.

And since I'm anal, they let me go out there and watch the tech do it. It's cool to get a second opinion on some things anyways. (headbang)

LOL. You just have to train the punks that you will make them cry if something is not exactly how you want it. It does take time but worth it over time.

It's not worth it though. It costs twice as much than doing it myself, and then I can never know if they did it right. So, I'm paying extra for doubt.

I'm just not afraid to get my hands a little dirty and do things for myself. My wife even asked me to show her how to change the oil.

My time is worth alot and if I spend 20 bucks more then doing it myself and not having the hassle, blessed be me! (cabpatch)(cabpatch)

Maybe Mazda won't trust you doing it yourself (omg) (j/k)

People like to break it down to, I'm worth x amount of dollar per hour. So, that 1hr I took changing oil (I actually take about 2 hours), I could be making $30, $50, $100, $500, $1000 whatever you think your rate is.

Fact is most of the time we (at least myself) are just sitting around not doing anything productive. If I didn't do the oil change, I'm not going to be making $x dollar more. Unless of course you own your own business.

In any case, I let it drain for about an hour or so. You'll be surprised it is still dripping (maybe a drop every 2-3 secs). I can't imagine how the quick lube place can get it all done in 10mins.

Luckily for me I haven't had to keep my car long enough to warrant any transmission or engine work. I do my own brake job, spark plugs, O2 sensor, ignition coil. I guess I'm fortunate the things I have had to work on is pretty easy - even a caveman can do it.

I'm not sure how the tech guy will do it, but a friend told me his dealer actually didn't tighten the bolt on his oil pan and it leaked out. Fortunately it was discovered early and the engine didn't seized. So, if I can do it myself, I will. If not, I'll bring it to the dealership.

The one's I know first hand, or know someone who did...

Oil never changed, but charged for.
New oil not put in.
Not enough oil put it.
Too much oil put in.
Drain plug not tight
Drain plug TOO tight
Oil filter loose
Oil filter not replaced
Wrong oil put in
Cheap oil substituted.
Tried to sell a new filter by showing a fake dirty one.
Got the interior greasy and grimy.

After your engine seizes, just TRY to get Poopoo Lube to pay for a new engine.

And you're right. How DO they get all the old oil out when it takes a really long time to work it's way down to the pan?

They don't

It takes 30 minutes to do at home and I can spend 10 of those doing something else while the oil drains completely. So how long does it take to drive to the oil change place, wait for the work to get done, try to get out and pay while they are harassing you to do 5 other unnecessary services and drive home, Mr. My Time is Too Valuable?

Those mind reading courses have paid off well, Todd. Amen
