Chipping a engine BS...

Vishnu Engineering has a "piggy-back" for the 135-335 BMW TT's that adds 90 hp. They have it for other vehicles also, not an MS3 at this time.

This has been verified? A simple "chip" upgrade and you get 90 HP. There has to be a caveat or two to this story... Otherwise, how did BWM miss out on 30% of their engine's potential that a simple tune would have solved?

BMW doesnt necesarily want you to have that power and when caught with that tune and it not being a Dinon tune your warranty is gone.

Yes, look at the EPA numbers and catalitysts. All controlled and monitored with the importing of their vehicles. Like 20 years ago bringing a Lamborghini into the US. They were seriously de-tuned.

It's probably the same philosophy that makes Porsche pull the reins on the Cayman's HP: to not compete with the 911. A ~400 HP 335i from the factory would make people think twice about the M3.

Also, while the Vishnu maps might eek out an additional 90 HP, is this peak, does it come at the cost of daily drivability or a broad torque range?

The people that think that a NA car like the VR6 can get that much HP from just a chip are the people that buy the ECU chips from ebay (resistors).

Business couldn't be better.

This is the most obvious answer.

That and also the fact that upping the boost has an inevitable reliability tradeoff that would theoretically shorten the lifespan of some engine components.

yes, clearly the built motor, full exhaust, bigger turbo, FMIC and other mods have nothing to do with it... it was all the chip...before tuning.

Plus a bigger turbo, stroker motor, intake and exhaust manifolds, big injectors. Very built motor indeed.

Also why Ford has yet to release anything cool from there outside-of-usa brands. Like the RS series. Or anything from Australia.

Can't compete with the precious Mustang.

(well same reason as in competing with their top cars not necessarily chipping, so minor off-topic)

I'd never thought about it that way, but you make a good point. Still if they import a limited run of the Focus RS, they would be a lot more exclusive than a regular mustang that can be had with several engine/tranny configs (and thus allowing the RS to be sold at a higher price). I also think they could be sold to slightly different audiences, which I'm guessing could also be the case of the 335i vs M3. The 335 can be pointed a bit more towards the luxury end of the scale (or at least that's the impression I have) while the M3 is more focused; that said I do find it crazy that they can get 90 HP more out of the engine with just a chip. I'd like to know if those engines won't blow up after a while, or become a lot more twitchy.

Regarding the Focus RS they're "testing public reactions", Here's one in the streets of Mich.

I find it crazy too... 30% more power from just a chip and it is all safe (for the engine) and legal... Do I smell something funny?

I bet i know what the OP is really after: why cant Mazda offer US the same version they're selling to the Aussies, eh? It is amazing what a factory retuned ECU will do. Give us your chip and nobody gets hurt, mate. (gun)

The Aussie model: "The changes start with a power boost courtesy of a retuned Powertrain Control Module and free-flowing exhaust -- modifications good for a full 281 horses and 313 lb-ft of torque. Of course, that means the MPS Extreme should severely tromp our U.S.-spec 263 horsepower, 280 lb-ft MazdaSpeed3 at the dragstrip."

I know I wouldnt mind more power, but IMO I'd be jealous of them if their car had a broader power band (not just 2500-3000 rpms to play with) or more traction to make better use of the power than about 20 more horsies and 30 more torques.

Yeah I saw that post of one in Michigan... I would be all over that car and waiting for that guy to come out of where ever they were. I once saw a Euro Spec 1st gen Focus RS in that RS blue in Massachusetts.. I was driving a regular zx3 at the time so i s*** myself on the spot.

Don't understand why this is such an amazing concept for you? If I don't end up trading it in for an MS3, I know I am going to get an ECU reflash from the company APR (http://www.goapr.com/VW/products/ecu_upgrade_mkvgtitsi.html) for my 2008 VW GTI that brings it from 200hp and 207 ft/lbs to 254hp and 297 ft/lbs. That is a pretty amazing difference for like $500-$600.

This has been common in the VW community for years now. Got to love forced induction and stout german engineering...........Although, they don't appear to know all that much about reliable electrical systems .........

It should be more or less safe seeing that the Dinan reflash for 335i and 135i are still covered by a factory warranty when purchased through BMW (albeit at a pretty high price).

In the case of the 2.0 TFSI, I can see a bit more clearly the opportunity for gains with a retune....this is after all the same engine that makes a lot more power in "Audi form" than when it has the Veedub badge. The same was true for the 1.8T if I'm remembering correctly.
