Purchasing a CX-9

We intend on buying a CX-9 by the end of this week. We test drove one last Sunday, my wife is happy with it so I'm ready to buy it for her.

Does anyone have some advice before we step into the showroom? We are financing it through our credit union and we will trade in my car. My wife's current car will become my daily driver.

We live in Stafford Virginia.

Thanks.

Set a fair price for the CX9 and your trade that fits your budget and don't budge.

If they balk, then walk out. Do NOT start negotiating, because they will win.

If you intend to keep the car beyond it's warranty, then figure a comprehensive extended warranty into your budget as well.

Also, don't buy more CX9 than you need. Get the things you really need and want, and leave off the rest. This is a very well appointed car to begin with.

Enjoy

If you are buying a GT don't settle for a penny less than 7K - 8K off of sticker.

I tend to disagree with CX9 Sport....I say get the thing loaded. For 32K +/- you can get everything you can find in a 50K Lexus/BMW.

Best of luck!

Ditto! Go for the fully loaded model. Especially if you are financing, that extra $50 a month is well worth it.

We looked at a GT with the rear entertainment package, GT assist; MSRP was a little over 41k. Initially they were going to "eat profit" and give it to us for 37k and give us 6 k for our trade.

We walked away with a "we'll think about it" statement. Within 15 minutes of leaving the salesman called back with an offer for 33,900.

Here's the one that we are looking at:

We won't be leasing, my wife likes holding on to cars, it took her 5 years to finally agree to give me her stationwagon

Visit edmunds.com. There are lots of info on buying CX9.
If you aim for 2008, $10K off MSRP is do-able. (especially the loaded GT)
If you aim for 2009, $6K off MSRP is on my newspapers.

IF you can afford the fully loaded GT, then get it. MY point is to avoid overspending your budget. That thinking is exactly why our economy crashed. Everyone borrowed more than they could ultimately afford and then couldn't pay it back.

We could have bought more car, but we use the money we save to ENJOY the car, and to save for times like this. What happens when your payment uses up every last bit of paycheck, and then your company gives you an involuntary 6 months off? Bye bye shiny new car and clean credit report.

Oh, and it's more then $50 a month. You just made my point with that. The higher MSRP increases the taxes, registration, maintenance costs, fuel costs, etc, none of which people include in their budget.
I used to think just like you guys: always buy the nicest, most expensive version. Unfortunately, when a drunk driver took me out and I couldn't work, I lost everything. I have busted my ass to go from homeless to homeowner again, and I will never end up like that again. It's great to have nice things, but we don't need everything.

By the way, PGN did exactly what buyers should do. stick to his numbers, and walk if they are not met. No dealer will throw away a sale if the offer is reasonable. Some profit is better then none, especially now. Good job.

Just my opinion. Don't hate me because I'm beautiful.

Sporty, you sound a lot like my dad.... Nonetheless good advice. On a side note, we should change the forum name to "Sporty's Blog"

Don't intend to preach, but once you've been homeless because you didn't include tough times in your financial plan, you see things a LOT differently.

It's a lot easier to never dig that hole, than to dig your way out of it after the walls cave in.

A question to ask yourselves: How many car and house payments can you afford to make if you lose your regular income?

Good advice all around and I really do appreciate the input.

@ CX-9 SportOwner, tracking on what you're saying and thanks for bringing that up. It's easy to forget those concerns when you are picturing the vehicle sitting in your garage.

That seems like a great price in writing!

We bought it today.

It's Brilliant Black / black interior

Optional equipment:

Cargo net
All weather floormats
Wheel locks
LEV emissions equipment
1MC Moonroof/Bose/Sirrus
2PA GT Assist

MSRP was $40,350.00

We had them install a rear entertainment system ($1200.00)

Taxes / prep/ registration was around $1,800.00

Total was supposed to be $43,350.00 OTD

Trade in was a 04 Mustang trade in value $6,500.00

We told the dealer that we would drive it off the lot for $30,000.00.

He said deal way to quickly...probably should have said 28k...

I took it back up tonight to get the DVD played installed.

I'll get a better picture tomorrow when I pick it up.

Exactly what low emission equipment are you talking about?

No idea as to what it is, it is listed under the options as:

CE1 LEV Emissions Equipment....no charge

My guess is that it maybe for California vehicles, which wouldn't explain why it was for sale in Virginia(shrug)
