i think it looks really good. You can definitely see where mazda is going with the lineup. The next cx7 design will be more extreme design wise a la 2010 mazda3

As the hyped-up 2010 Mazda MX-5 made its debut in Chicago this afternoon, further north in Canada, Mazda's refreshed 2010 CX-7 was unveiled to the world for the first time with a new styling and a new 2.5-liter engine -- the same one that serves duty in the Mazda3 and Mazda6.

No doubt designed as a more economical alternative to the usual 244-horsepower turbocharged 2.3-liter engine that is typically found in the CX-7's engine bay, the slightly larger, normally-aspirated four-banger will produce 161 horsepower and 161 lb-ft of torque. Though pricing and fuel economy figures are not yet available, we're willing to bet the offering will trade a little power for improved gas mileage and a lower MSRP. Also yet to be announced is if we'll see a similarly-powered version in the U.S.

Beyond the new engine option, Mazda has revised the CX-7's styling both inside and out. Most noticeable is the new five-point front grille that is quickly becoming an integral part of Mazda's current design language and is also visible in the redesigns of the Mazda3, MX-5, and RX-8. Inside, the gauges get a refresh with three-dimensional dials and a Multi Information Display. The passenger's seat receives power adjustment, while a three-position driver's seat memory and Bluetooth compatibility are also new.

Mazda says that overall, the 2010 CX-7 is refined greatly over the current version and that improvements extend all the way to the build quality. The body rigidity has reportedly also been improved, with it lower noise, vibration, and harshness levels are readily apparent -- even wind noise has been reduced, according to the automaker.

While no official announcement has been made, we'd expect to see the 2010 Mazda CX-7 make its U.S. debut at the New York Auto Show this April.

Wow, looks good.

2.5L with 161hp? An I thought my Mazda5s were slooooow :D

I got a 2009 mazda6i a couple of weeks back as a rental. Nice car, handling and design but the new 4cyl 2.5L (with 5AT) acceleration left me very unimpressed. I was expecting a decent bump from the current NA 2.3L but did not feel a big difference.

I'm sure the 6MT makes a big difference on that engine, but I doubt MT will be available for the CX-7 (at least in North America)

Keep in mind you don't notice/feel the speed as much in the new 6 because it is so refined. It is a touch quicker than the 08 2.3L, but not a life changing amount. The size of the car eats up alot of the extra power. However an improvement in gas mileage in a bigger car and the power delivery is alot smoother. The new auto tranny's in the 3&6 are fantastic. Mazda probably has the best auto tranny's in the under $40k price range.

The CX-7 with the 2.5L definately won't be a screamer, but in FWD only trim it will probably match the current Mazda 5 for acceleration. It should weigh about 3650lbs, the 5 is around 3350-3400lbs. So the 2.5L and new tranny should make-up the difference.

Yes, FWD only.

I've been checking some numbers just for the sake of power/weight comparison (na 2.5L version):

  • 2007 CX-7 Curb Weight: 3710 lbs (Of course the 2.5L engine weighs less than the 2.3L DISI turbo, right?
  • 2007 Mazda5 (2.3L): Curb Weight: 3,333 lbs (Auto)
  • 2009 Mazda6i Sport (2.5L): Curb Weight: 3309 lbs (Auto)

Damn, even as FWD only it is going to be interesting, but I'm sure fuel economy will be a big plus compared to the current model.

Yeah, it will be interesting. I guess the thinking is that this 2.5L model would compete with the Nissan Rogue, but what about AWD?

I would rather see them add the 2.5L and AWD to the Mazda 5. That would be my wifes next vehicle if they did that.

Yeah, that would be nice, good thing wife prefers MT. AWD is a nice to have here but not a should like you guys up-north.

Only the JDM Premacy gets AWD, but with the 2.0L model (and they also get the steering wheel mounted shifters (rant))

OK OK, off-topic, I think if they rework the CX-7 2.5L gear to RPMs ratio they may get some more dough. They have done that for the Mazda5 (AT and MT) and although the RPMs are high (especially at cruise speed) it makes it a little bit more responsive.

Wow the new Mazda6 is lighter than the Mazda5?
