people, its not the 80s. adjustable lifters, seriously?
my friend had a 3 with 11,000 miles and this happened. very loud tick, became louder when any amount of load was put on the engine. after some wrangling over oil change receipts and dates, mazda replaced the engine. they don't adjust squat any more. they won't even pay a tech to pull the thing apart and diagnose it. its cheaper from a warranty standpoint to pull the engine, drop in a new one, send the old one back and let the customer be on their merry way and let corporate monkeys tear the faulty engine down and figure out what - if anything - was the cause. at the dealer that i buy from, i am the only person who ever orders cylinder heads, blocks, rods, pistons, bearings, cranks, valves, seals, etc. i guarantee you the service department isn't. i probably know more about putting an engine in a protege or mazdaspeed3 or 6 than any of the technicians there. last i checked, the engine manuals were on the shelf still in shrinkwrap. most manufacturers will simply not pay the book time to a technician for a tear down, diagnosis, rebuild on a warranty claim.
hell, when i was working for the dealers, we had a suzuki aerio blow an engine and suzuki
totalled the car and gave the customer a brand new one.
