TOKYO Most of the automotive world might be focused on Detroit at the moment, but in Japan, car manufacturers and tuners alike gather at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Salon this time of year. Inside Line has gathered some pre-show information from Mazda.

At the center of Mazda's stage will be the all-new Axela (Mazda 3), which goes on sale this spring, and the Premacy hydrogen rotary hybrid concept. Using a dual-fuel system, this Premacy can run on either gasoline or hydrogen that powers its onboard rotary engine and electric motor. Mazda tells us that this minivan can now cover up to 125 miles on hydrogen alone, significantly reducing CO2 levels.

Other highlights at the Mazda booth will be specially prepared "Circuit Trial" track-ready versions of the company's bread-and-butter cars, including the new Mazda 3 Circuit Trial, the Mazda 6 Circuit Trial, Mazda 2 Circuit Trial and the RX-8 Circuit Trial, all tuned by Mazdaspeed. Apart from unique aerodynamic parts, racing decals, sport seats, bigger and lighter sport wheels and grippier tires, each car employs a stiffer suspension setup and high-performance brake pads.

Mazda has been perfecting this customizing technique over the past eight years, since it first launched its MX-5 NR-A, a race-ready coupe with roll cage, four-point harness, racing seat, sport suspension, lightweight wheels and beefier brakes. The star of a well-known local one-make racing series, the latest NR-A version will also be on display.

The Tokyo salon is held at the huge Makuhari Messe complex just outside Tokyo to celebrate the very best that the local customizers have to offer. This is Japan's SEMA show, and is actually the world's third biggest tuner and customizer show after SEMA and Germany's Essen show

Just a few days before the company introduces its tuned Nissan 370Z at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Salon, Matchless Crowd Racing (MCR) has unveiled a few pictures showcasing its treatment.

MCR has tuned the ECU of the sporty Nissan, added an Endless brake kit, a sport suspension and a new stainless steel muffler to give the vehicle a throaty exhaust note.

The aero kit includes a front spoiler, side skirts, rear lip and rear wing. Everything minus the wing is available in either fiberglass or carbon fiber. Enkei alloy wheels wrapped in Yokohama rubber finish off the Japanese tuner's package.

- Exhibits to include RX-8 and other 'Circuit Trial' models, customized Mazda Biante minivans and eco-friendly technologies -

Mazda’s stand at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2009 will adopt the theme: “Driving-oriented environmental technologies for endless driving pleasure.” The spirited lineup of exhibits will include the next-generation Mazda Axela (North American spec Mazda3), which is being revealed for the first time in Japan. Other exhibits will include “Circuit Trial” versions of the all-new Mazda Axela, Mazda RX-8, other popular Mazda models, and six customized versions of the new Mazda Biante minivan, which went on sale earlier this year.

Mazda’s environmental technology exhibits at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2009
Mazda aims to improve the fuel economy of Mazda vehicles sold globally by an average of 30 percent by 2015. Based on its long-term vision for technology development, Sustainable Zoom-Zoom, Mazda continues to advance its technology development in order to offer all its customers outstanding environmental and safety features as well as pure driving pleasure.
At the 2009 Tokyo Auto Salon, Mazda will showcase its weight reduction and powertrain technologies, including internal combustion engines that combine driving pleasure with environmental performance.

Vehicle and technology exhibits
-Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid-i-stop
Mazda’s i-stop is a proprietary engine stop-start system that uses direct injection technology. It improves fuel economy by approximately 10 percent and restarts the engine in just 0.35 seconds, ensuring that drivers experience a natural driving feel with no sense of delay. i-stop is scheduled for launch in Japan in 2009.-Weight reduction technologies
Reducing vehicle weight is a key method of improving fuel economy and dynamic performance. The display will include a new plastic molding technology that significantly reduces the amount of plastic resin used in parts, and various techniques (suspension parts, high-tensile steel, etc.) that were used to cut the weight of the Mazda Demio by approximately 100 kilograms.

Decals off and we are on business! Love the wheels in all of them...

Is it just me, or does the car seem bigger overall?

I hope they black out the area near the exhaust. And the front looks...hideous. I can't wait to see a picture of a front license plate on it. Someone else said, it's going to look like a gigantic bucktooth.
