5000 mile review

Yup, I've finally hit 5000 miles in 3 months, and I'll write up a review that might interest potential buyers of the ms3. First, I should mention that my previous car was a Toyota Prius, and a BMW 325i before that.

So, why did I trade in my Prius for a ms3? Simply put, I was so bored with the prius. When I test drove the ms3, it felt like a rocket. I said, $5/gallon gas price be dammed, I'm getting a ms3.

It was a thrill to be driving something that was so fast and handled so well. But soon, I got used to the acceleration, and I started noticing things that bothered me more and more. Most prominent was the noise. The engine noise under hard acceleration didn't bother me much, but the exhaust drone did get on my nerves. Turning up the music eliminated the annoying drone, but sometimes you just want some quiet cruising. After doing some research I decided that aftermarket exhaust would not help. So after a few thousand miles, I kinda got used to it. But my advice to Mazda would be to lower the noise for the 2010 ms3. I would rather sacrifice a few hp for a quieter car. If the 09 WRX can do it, ms3 should do it too.

My second gripe is the transmission. It's not easy to engage into 1st and 2nd gears smoothly, especially if you want to shift quickly. Others have described the clutch as being "grabby", and I would agree. Also, I think the engine mount isn't very secure, which may be causing the crappy shifting. I hate modding cars, so I won't even try a new motor mount. So now I simply tolerate the transmission, and I just engage the clutch more slowly. I've gotten used to it, and it doesn't bother me much now.

Other than these 2 gripes, the ms3 is a great car. Very practical, roomy, and I'm getting an overall 27 mpg. And most importantly it's pretty fun because of the acceleration and taut handling.

But I keep thinking whether I would have been more happy if I had a BMW 328, or infiniti g35/g37, or even the lexus is350. I could have bought any of these, but I just wanted to be more frugal. But that's just my nature. I keep thinking about my next car. It'll be fun in a couple years. The new ms3 will be out, and I'll compare it against the wrx, bmw 3 series, infiniti G, acura TL, etc.

^^ get a motor mount... you'll love the fact that the MS3 will just take off the same time you give it go go juice... instead of that lunging motion.. bleh

TRZ, CP-e(if available) and others are up for grabs... I got the TRZ and am very happy with it! =)

glad you're enjoying your MS3!

I had a G35 and absolutely hated it. The MS3 is better in every way.

You would have been more happy with a bimmer until you were like, meh, i dont need to eat this week, the heat doesn't need to be on. My point is of course you are going to get some little problems here and there, its a mazda not a bimmer.

and bimmers don't have any problems? yea right. in their case it's the owners that end up destroying those cars and not the cars themselves

glad you're enjoying the MS3. I'm still wary of turbo motors so I'm hoping the next 3 is close to 200 NA horses. I'll still keep an eye out for a used MS3 though.

it's interesting you would say that. i just test drove a 08 g35 sedan automatic and i really liked it. lots of power. good cornering ability. the main advantage over the ms3 is that it's quiet. my ms3 recently started having vibration and creaking noise coming from the center console. the ms3 just doesn't feel as solid and well put together.

You sure its the exhaust drone your hearing? My speed 6 is by no means quiet but its the engine noise that I hear on long drives . . . not exhaust (and i have a louder GHL w/out resonater).

yes, i'm pretty sure it's the exhaust. it's been mentioned by other ms3 owners. the noise is present whenever you let go of the gas pedal, and loudest when the rpm is >2500.

if i get the motor mount, is there a shop that can install it for me?
i'm in the inland empire. what part of CA are you in?
does the TRZ mm transmit vibration to the car?

I agree with comments on the motor mount. If you don't want too much vibration, get the Corksport MM inserts. I'm very happy with mine as they have improved clutch and shifting feel, without the excessive vibrations, unless the engine is bogging.

I had an '06 6MT Sedan. Maybe the '08's are a lot better, but my '06 was a piece or crap. You guys complain about the Bose system in the MS3, it is 1000% better than the Bose system in the G35. The HVAC also sucked, it wasn't as fast and didn't handle as well as the MS3, it had as many or more rattles, and the engine sounded like it was always about to grind to a screeching halt. Just not the quality I was expecting. The day I traded it for the Envoy (that my wife now drives) was one of the happiest days of my life. Sad, huh?

Unfortunately, to me a WRX sounds like crap no matter how loud so that comparison sucks. They really aren't any quieter than the MS3 now that they're making more power so it's poor as well. There are no quiet performance cars above 2500 rpm.

I think the MS3 exhaust sounds pretty damn good stock, especially after you take the second cat out.

good writeup, glad to hear you like the car! i echo the sentiments about beefing up the engine mount for better shifting.

I just hit 5K at the end of last week. I have a few things that I think Mazda could have done better. (gripes)

1.Squeek from center console
2. Motor mount
3. stock fmic (why have anything else)
4. rear sway assembly was making clunk
5. AWD

Other than a few bugs, this is an excellent little car. All the reviews I have read on it were positive and satisfied with the car. But with a stock FMIC and AWD this car would not only perform better, but be able to compete with Evo and Sti which would most likely attract more customers. Still lovin' the car as much as day one though =)

i am at 4800 miles. maybe 5 months?

i dont mind the drone. i dont like the "floatiness" of the suspension. feels like it goes up and stays up too long. i had to get a new gas cap, that sucked. i think the stereo is very anemic. (non-bose).

the shifter is notchy.

i will upgrade the rear motor mount, and probably get the eibach springs. if i could do it again, am not positive i would go the same route. gas prices cooled the driving enthusiasm. i putt along, and get 24-25mpg. i could have the same thrills in a TDI jetta.

i also am not thrilled with the roughness of the inner door panels and dash. it has a sharkskin texture to it. if you forget to apply lotion in the morning, you can sand off some exoderm when you rub up on it, and leave a white streak on the dash...gross. ash-y door panels, gross.

just hit 3k on mine. i had a bmw 528i before my ms3, and i miss the smooth drive and quiet refined luxury that i didnt truly appreciate till i sold it. the ms3 is fun, and faster, and handles harder, but as far as the daily cummute... i miss driving 'first class' if you will.

I hate it when STI/EVO fanboys buy a MS3. AWD, FMIC, blah, blah, blah The car isn't meant to compete with them dumbass.
