Winter Tires

well, i just tried to mount one of my new steelies. i tried the front right tire...here are the specs of the steelie and tire:

16x6.5 5-114 et55 mounted w/ blizzak revo1's in 215/55/16.

it's really, really, really tight. after mounting, i drove the car up and down the driveway, slowly. at first i heard this harmonic metallic sound, but i THINK this is from some buildup (i washed the car yesterday, and it's been sitting since)...

while rolling up and down the driveway, i didn't hear or feel anything unusual. i dismounted the wheel, and took a look. didn't se any clear signs of rubbing.

so here's the newb question...is it really obvious when your brakes aren't clearing???

thanks

I'm in the same boat as you as I went with the +55 offset thinking +42 will push the wheels too far out and cause rubbing on the fender (I'm lowered on coilovers). But it should be easy to determine if they clear the calipers. Jack up the corner, mount the steelie and see if the wheel rotates freely without any scraping sounds. I mean, you even drove on it and nothing catastrophic happened. At most, you might need a small spacer (3 or 5 mm maybe) up front but these are cheap, 15 bucks a pair.

I think what's throwin me off is the offset on yours, they seem like the wheels are going to stick out too far.

I hear ya, but according to the rep at tirerack the +45 offset will work with either tire size. Here are some pics of them on my P5 to give you a visual idea....maybe it will help, maybe not?

Those pics were taken right after I had them mounted. I curbed the one a few months back and honestly it isn't bad.

I did post a pic in my f/s thread but it didn't come out the greatest. Here is a better shot.

So according to http://www.wheelsmaster.com/rt_specs.jsp,

Comparing stock MS3 wheels and tires with your Tribute wheels and tires at +45 offset:

205/60/16 tires on those wheels will stick out 2 mm (0.1'') farther. Acceptable for most cars. And the speedo will be practically dead on.

Sounds like a possibility?

I can't see why 16" mazda wheels won't clear the MS3 rotors..should be in good shape. If the Toronto guys are installing steelies, then the Mazda wheels should fit just fine.

yeah..i already looked into getting some spacers...i was in a rush to get the wheel on and off, didn't even check to see if the wheel freely rotated while jacked up (well, i did, but the parking brake was on and the car was in reverse).

again, on visual inspection it looked REALLY tight, but doable. i'll probably just get some spacers...

on the plus, the high profile tires filled out the fenders rather nicely, and black steelies don't look all that bad on CWP.

I went ahead and ordered my winters...

Sport Edition F10 16x7 +50mm wheels
Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60 225/55R16 tires...

should be here in a week or two.

Just to update, my steelies from tire rack fit just fine. I tossed one on the front to see how it would fit. Fitment was fine! So they do fit, no rubbing. 16x6.5 5-114 et42

How much did that all cost you? I priced those out to about $840 I believe.
yeah that sounds about right... plus shipping which was like $80 from the delaware warehouse to my home in Northern VA. So, the wheels were more expensive but the shipping was about $30 less than if I had gotten steelies :-P (Steel wheels weigh like 25 lbs vs like 17-18 for a cheap alloy wheel)

I talked to Luke from TireRack who has been the liason to the NASIOC forums for a long time. He was actually gracious enough to provide a rational explanation for the difference in stories between "they don't fit" and "they do fit"

Apparently they just switched suppliers for the steelies and the new ones don't quite clear. It seems that if you got the 16's that fit, then you lucked out and got the last of them.

Also, take note, just because they can bolt on doesn't really mean they fit properly. Recall that all parts of the vehicle including the suspension and wheels have SOME flex in them. You need at least several milimeters of clearance to be considered a good fit.

I highly recommend Luke when you order from TireRack. His code is 362. He can be reached at 877-522-8473 ext. 362.

I am no longer buying 16's due to the possibility of something stupid like a rock getting stuck between the wheel and the brakes. The cost isn't worth worrying, or debating on size and fitment issues.

The clearance looks liked plenty. I even dropped the car down, and moved it to listen for any rubbing etc. When i throw them all on and begin driving I will update on the fitment.

Quick question will 2007 mazda 3 16's fit on my 08.5 MS3? I can pick up a set for around $150 so if they fit I think thats a pretty good deal.(uhm)

i fit 16s from a dodge intrepid, they were rubbing on the caliper, but a 1/4 spacer fixed that no problem, you should be fine
