source for legit ported box?

i have a type r 12 in a sealed cube, built to the spec of the alpine recommendations. i am using the stock bose hu, a re-q, and the rear two channels of a pdx 4.150. some in here and elsewhere have suggested i try a ported box to expoit the sub, esp under what most might consider light power.

i am very adept at building things, and have been building boxes since i was 15 (i am 29). the problem is i don't have my table saw anymore and i refuse to build one NOT using a table.

so, i want to buy one. what is the best way/ outlet to go about this? i am talking a legit audiofile quality TUNED box, specifically for my sub.

Most car stereo shops will build a custom box for you, I don't know what they charge, though. If you go ported DO NOT build it to manufacturer's specs, they usually spec too small of a box with too high of a port-tuning frequency (to save space and have a short port length. This is what gives ported boxes the boom stereotype in cars. Use a program like winisd, enter the T/S parameters of your sub and decide if you can fit what's recommended.

thanks for the winisd lead. i filled in what i could for the speaker and ran the numbers for a ported box. they are actually almost spot on compared to the alpine ported box dimensions, which i didnt expect because most info i've heard mirrored what you said about being too conservative.

i'm curious, i made my own data entry sheet for winisd for the type r 12. do you know what "BL" and "Pe" stand for in the custom speaker parameters maker in winisd? I assumed Pe is the speakers ideal RMS wattage. i don't know what BL is and i assume if it's a 1.85ohm per coil DVC sub, i'd put "1.85" in the "re" box, right?

B1 is the inductance of the speaker at the resonant frequency, Pe isnt needed for your WinISD calculations.

and yes, 1.85 for Re sounds about right for a dual 2ohm coil.

Outside of your local shop, there are a number of people online that run businesses building sub boxes, do some searches.

how do i figure out the BL with the given parameters? I've looked online and i can't seem to figure that out....

is "dia" for voice coil diameter, of speaker diameter?

you DONT need to put in most of the information to get box volumes.

Look in the help file.. it will tell you the specific things to enter, and the order to enter them in.

I THINK you only need Mms, Fs, Vas, Qts and Qms

ok, i mentioned in another thread that i wanted to just build one myself. i put it in today; the improvement is AMAZING vs. the sealed 1cube box. i mean, incredible. i put a sheffield labs disc in and turned it up. we aren't talking bass tracks..it's music. the front windshield was moving ALOT. very shocking response with what some might consider to be a little power.

the only bummer is my carpeting job was almost perfect, except one edge and it happens to be the most visible edge, but a little marker took care of it for the most part.

specs are about 2.5ft, with a 4x17" port. the curve is very nice, it's as flat as i could get it w/o any crazy super low hz bumps.

i could have even more hatch space if i wanted, but i have the box sitting ahead of the piece right behind the rear seats, so there is a several inch gap between the seats and the angled back of the box. on a positive note, the box angle matches the seatbacks exactly if i wanted to push it back.

thanks. i am not entirely happy with the carpet, but i think that will wear off. it's just because it's fresh. i dunno, it seemed like it wasn't as bad when i had it in the garage, but as soon as i put it in the car, it sticks out like a sore thumb. i rubbed some marker on the edge, and it hid it for the most part, but i keep thinking about it.

atleast it sounds good. i have noticed though that if the windows are down at all, or a door open, it gets louder. makes sense, but still.

it's under the plastic spare tire tray thing. it is mounted squarely and level, to the corner of the amp that sticks out relative to the edge of the tray looks like it is meant to be there. i also have the re-q under there, right next to it. luckily the pdx amps are tiny for their output, so it's not hard to find a spot.

next time i have the box out and false floor up, i'll take a picture.

Believe it or not, ebay has some good slotted boxes for cheap. Just make sure you get the boxes that use MDF and not partical board. You could also get away with a 1/2 inch think MDF for the box too. Boxes are simple, and if you are looking for a simple cheap one that looks good, just check out ebay.
