$2008 GRM Challenge – Turbo AWD Mercury Tracer LTS

Pretty freaking amazing. I would have never attempted doing it on that budget. Here's hoping you keep it under the cap. (thumb)

this is really cool, alot of pro a scort guys always talk about doing awd swaps and only a few have attempted it.
i own 2 boosted escort gt's and bf 88 323 2wd with a bp swap and boost, i just scored the rare 90 AWD pro. enough of my builds, if your looking to get rid of some parts off the bf awd 323 , im looking for a set of door panels, center counsel and gauge cluster for the gtx.
i just happen to stumble on this, im not on this forum ever( i will be know tho a little more)
but im on clubprotege and feoa(escort forum)most of my time.
if you are looking to get rid of those parts email me brillow@charter.net as that im not on here every day.
thanks great build.

Thanks! I lurk at the boards you mentioned and you're right. There's always talk, but no commitment. I suppose that added a bit of inpiration.

I'll be shooting an email to you shortly.

i think kevin might be the 1st for the tracer! the other 2 were mx3's, and one escort.

Has anyone ever converted the sedan?

Thanks, again! :) So far, I'm about $1500 (nothing yet reclaimed) into the build with nearly all parts on hand. I'm pretty surprised that it has come in that low. Knowing my luck, though, I'm sure something will sneak up and nab the remainder.

The terminal hour has arrived for the 323. The car gave and gave and in the end will be scrapped out for reclamation funds. The end came with a few cheap beers and a sawsall.

In roughly an hour, the poor GTX chassis went from one to six [transportable] peices. Since no one showed interest in the shell within the various places that I posted it for sale, it was destined for scrap. With that in consideration, the typical scrapper doesn't accept whole cars without a title, hence the separation.

I'm happy, though. It's good to have the extra room and I really need it to finish the Tracer. It's suddenly like I've added an extra bay onto the garage. :)

But anyway, I threw together a craptastic animation and hosted it on my old ISP's ftp . It'll likely get hosed. One to the beer induced fun!

nope! noone does the protege because its pointless because of the awd ones floating around.... and noone has done a lx coupe..

so you are the FIRST! in the tracer and in the sedan!!!

Closer to Painting

It's so nice to have the extra bay in the garage free now that the GTX is gone. Moving on...

To properly change the color of a car, everything must be removed/detached from it. Everything. Doing so greatly helps in hiding the majority of the half-assidness that typically goes into a color-change respray ;). Taking an untested car completely apart that hasn't run in months down to nothing with only six weeks remaining sounds like a grand idea, doesn't it?

As the car sits now, the only removable parts that remain are the front and rear glass, rear subframe and suspension, trunk lid, and doors (gutted). Everything else is out. With the rear wheels sitting on the ground, I can lift the front of the car by hand with little effort. The complexity of a car really becomes apparent when it is disassembled. I think I can get everything back together ;). Most of the parts only fit one way and when it isn't bolted in by the standard metric hardware, it just clips in. Furthermore, the parts usually only fit one way, right? We'll see.

I think degreasing that engine would lose another 20 lbs out of the car.

Wanna come over this weekend and help? I'll feed ya cheap beer and likely pizza or Waffle House. :)

The engine and transmission are terribly nasty. That's on the list of things to do for this weekend. I hope to have the body work done this weekend as well.

I would, but I'd likely have to bring Brady as well. Jenn's doing a bunch of stuff today. I'll see what tomorrow looks like, though. Hell, maybe he'd be useful...somebody's got to get into those little nooks and crannies! He'd probably try to eat the grease though.

Nice choice of vehicle. Cool project. Found this while searching Google for Tracer LTS'.

Back in high school, I drove my dad's Ford management leases...1994 Calypso Green LTS, 1995 Sunrise Red LTS, 1996 Oxford White LTS. Bought a new Escort GT in 1995, the only one built with it's color, radio delete, sunroof, ABS, manual trans. The GT now has 37k miles.

Cosworth is the only one I like. And those were UK spec and highly sought after. Anyone see those around?

About as often as I see the Pulsar GTiR .... which is never. I've seen the Cosworth Escort once, and I don't remember if it was here in NY or back in Wisconsin.

Indeed. That is a beautiful EGT. I could only wish that the Tracer will turn out as pretty (it won't, unfortunately).

That's pretty sweet regarding your Tracer history. '96 LTS's are definately a rare breed.

Every time I make a trip to Jamaica...I see at least 1 (because of a customer car at my uncle's tuning shop)...but sometimes more.
As for the Cosworth...early 90s.
