COBB SRI Installed!

S U, do you have an opinion as to why Cobb box came into design. Is it to suppress noise?

Its main purpose is to lower intake temps. They have had the same heatshield/box out for the Subaru's SRI for quite some time.

I have read a fair bit about the comparisons between the cai and the sri. And a bit of experience with the them. If these guys are protecting the IAT, they might know something and are adjusting for it. Of course there is more to the air intake flow than just temp but i feel more comfortable with more coolerha air being pulled from in front of the motor and radiator. it really is an old school 60s-70s method that works. The mazdaspeed cai, which I have, is still not getting the best air available but it sure is better than the stock box

Part of the CAI vs. SRI argument is that with the SRI's filter placement, it is much closer to that of the stock box so it can work better with the MAF and is capable of flowing more air since there is less tubing the air has to flow through. Another argument is that since the turbo is going to heat up the intake air big time no matter whether you have an SRI or CAI, there wouldn't be much gains from the CAI when considering post intercooler temps.

Well... the thing is, temperature exchange isn't an all or nothing proposition. There is only a finite amount of cooling the intercooler can provide, so a colder intake charge will always result in a colder mass of air after the intercooler. The SRI is definitely sucking in warmer air than a CAI, and the result will be a warmer post-intercooler air mass. It won't necessarily be much cooler, but it will be cooler. Differences in performance will be slight, but will be there. That's just physics.

Whether or not it is worth the extra hassle on the install, extra cost, and slight (albeit real) risk of hydrolocking your motor is certainly up for debate, and which provides better airflow is something you can argue all day, the post intercooler temperature argument is valid.

For my money I'll get the SRI, because it solves the major problem with airflow on the intake side. While it won't be maximizing gains by minimizing the temperature of the intake charge, it'll allow me to go back to stock more easily for some unknown warranty reason.

Once I get my SRI installed, I am going to really take a hard look @ the stock box, make my own box but make it so the stock airbox cover fits on the top of it. This would really hide the aftermarket intake from unknowing eyes :) use some plastic channel to capture the air from that upper hole in the front, as well as pull air from under the grill with some flexible wire hose.

I just installed mine last night. i really didnt notice any "gains" just a bad grin on my face from the incredible sound the bypass valve makes. honestly i think its all for noise.

That's interesting! Mine pulls hard as hell after I installed the Cobb SRI.

May i ask about, the volume of air, and or what increased speed air can travel with a performance intake? We have talked about IATs and I agree on most all of the points made by you guys. thanks

Dashhawk went in after my Cobb SRI, so I don't have a baseline for IAT..... plus my ambient has been registering 104* here in Maryland lately, so I'm sure you don't want my readings right now ;)

That is

fn hot. in the bad way

Alright, back up! Today I monitored my IAT and ambient air temperature on my way to school (teacher, not a student). BTW I only have cobb sri and tsx-h for go-fast. On the tsx-h I'm running 2 washers right now instead of 4 working on a comparisson on another post. Readings are coming from a dashhawk flashed with the latest beta about a month ago.

After about 90 seconds of warm-up I registered:
AMB: 76
IAT: 88
Once I started moving, the IAT immediately dropped to about 75.
Continuing my drive I mainly got AMB 73 IAT 73, unless I stopped for a light, at which point the IAT always jumped up to between 88 and 90.

When I arrived at school I noted that the AMB had gone up a few degrees but the IAT remained at 73 while driving. When I stopped in my parking spot, the idle IAT was upto 93. Imagine if my drive was more than about 15 minutes (and don't be jealous, I'm looking at an hour plus for maybe my new school next year)

Any heatsoak seems to be neglidgeable as sonnas you get moving
