P5 -> MSP Conversion: What else do I need?

Hi everybody! (hi)

It looks like I'm joining the ranks of the darkside and finally going FI! (evil)

I'm buying NEboosted's kit seen here and I'm wondering what else exactly do I need to make this work on my FS-DE 2.0 NA p5.

After doing some searching and reading up on here's a list of what I think I need so far:

updated list:
*MSP ecu
*new turbo cai intake
*a few clamps (per the FS thread)
*colder plugs
*tapped oil pan
*boost and wideband a/f gauges
*FMIC (so I can use the p5 radiator or upgrade to the non-turbo diesel familia radiator)

Is that all? I feel like I'm missing something here because it seems a little too easy! I know there are things that should be upgraded (i.e. motor mounts, downpipes, exhaust, IC, etc), but first thing's first - I just need to get it running!

Thanks a lot for you help! I'm really looking forward to learning more and spending more time in this section of the mazda forums!

You will need
1) FMIC ( so you dont have to change the stock P5 rad and a/c condensor )
2) Engine Managment (MSP ecu and possible SS afc)
3) 2 1/2 exhuast
4) Gauges --- boost, oil pressure and wide band

Plus when you sell that AWR header you buy some of these items !!!!

Car was just in a wreck and the header took the brunt of the damage. I doubt it's salvagable.

Subbin though that way I can reference this when I go MSP turbo

I need a FMIC because the stock smic doesn't fit with the stock p5 radiator, right?

And as for the exhaust, I'm actually running a msp catback right now. If I just added a midpipe would that work for now?

+1 to what ogsp5 said. Also just be sure to set aside some extra money for little crap the comes up that is easily forgotten. Some stuff comes to mind easily cause i just had to buy these for my turbo kit:

spark plugs
new gaskets
i needed a new wire/plug assembly cause the one for my o2 sensor is coming apart

*also if you put in a wideband (highly recommended) dont forget you need an extra o2 bung in your exhaust piping to put it in to (im currently figuring this one out as well)

*extra money for tunning the thing, unless you wanna tackle that yourself

I'll bring the stock mid pipe too. You can have that in the deal too.

even if you got the msp rad/smic it wouldnt fit on the p5 you need the msp a/c condenser as well.. im trying to figure out what intercooler to go with myself without breaking the bank..

just get a full custom fmic. That way you can still use the p5's rad and a/c condensor, not that much more expensive but its also a performance gain so...

that would work but I for one hate having too many couplers, im waiting to see the final price on turbolife's custom fmic i'll more than likely go that route unless an msp condenser falls in my lap soon lol.

besides when you do the math, if you wanna upgrade the smic and get hardpipes its like 500+ and dont forget to factor in the msp rad/fans/condenser/ac lines so that the smic can fit on the p5, it ends up costing more to go smic

i think he meant the fmic is an upgrade ;)

:P i was referring to..

:P putting out facts and slaying that myth that the P5 stock rad is better then the MSP. Unless you go with a AWR or somthing p5 rad, then its different... see the link above! :D

good stuff guys! ya, definetly need an a/f guage, boost guage would be nice too... i forgot about the colder plugs...i think jeff's going to use the msp ecu so tuning shouldn't be an issue on stock boost...

(cool) Thanks Rob!

The P5 rad IS NOT an upgrade over the MSP rad .... See link for info/proofs.

good info...thanks for the link!

I think this may be the route I'll take...

definitely getting the boost and wideband a/f gauge. thanks for the reminder about the plugs too. and yup, going with just the msp ecu for now. not trying to get into anything TOO crazy here. I want my p5 to be reliable over all things...well, except for faster :p

hmmm...I was thinking about the p5 radiator vs. the msp radiator, and since my radiator is getting replaced anyway (it was fubar'ed in the accident), would it be better for me just to get the msp radiator since it's bigger in volume? or maybe even an aftermarket one if it's not that much more expensive...?

Get the corksport, that way you dont have to screw with your ac set up. Then get a FMIC. There is a vendor who is developing a FMIC to go on sale soon. Or if you can waite have someone fab up one for you.

Get a vacuum block to route your vacuum lines. It makes things much more organized under the hood and easier to sort out if there is a leak. I also didn't see it when I skimmed the original post, but get the stainless "T" fitting that Kooldino sells for the oil feed line to the turbo.
