1999 Protege ES
I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else with a 99 ES? Over the weekend my transmission kicked the bucket. Starting at the beginning I noticed that my transmission was making a small and kind of quite clicking sound. Well this past weekend I went to go drive and the sound was now a big clicking sound. I took my car to a local transmission shop and they told me that I bent the output shaft, blew the output shaft bearing, and messed up some of the gears. I talked with the Mazda Dealer by my house during winter break and he said that normally mazda transmissions are pretty strong and they didn't recognize my situation. I'm just curious as to what I did or what could have happened.

LIES!

Mazda tranny's are notoriasly(sp) weak, even on a stock car they can blow.

Almost the EXACT same thing happened to me but I parked the car before it got that bad. I noticed a slight "ticking" noise and figured it was just a twig or something caught somewhere - not a big deal. It progressively got worse. I took it to the shop and they told me it was the input shaft bearing.

Took it to the transmission shop that my garage deals with for the BAD cases and they quoted me 900 for rebuild and 1600 for repair. When I called mazda they told me I had to buy the manual transmission gear by gear and assemble my own clusters.

What kind of miles are you at ? I'm at ~ 150 km (~94k miles)

I have about 150K miles right now, yeah I kind of figured the Mazda dealer was yanking my chain. Oh well at least it is getting fixed.

The same thing happened to my 2003 ES (auto tranny) except i never heard the low clicking noise, It was always loud. Took it to a buddy at the dealership and before they even lifted it up they knew it was the tranny. But mine was still under the limited warranty, so that means no deductible and a free rebuilt tranny. It was at like 32,000 miles.

I had the exact same thing happen to mine. I have pictures in this post of the damage. http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123694883

the F trannys aren't known to be strong.... there has been quite a few people who blown their diffs... F for ******!

The other day i was driving under light acceleration froma stop, and chunk, the trans had locked or snagged like a rock had got caught in it or something, and the car jerked forward.

i was scared to even keep driving. hadnt happened again.

You might just want to get that checked out. Before my transmission went out, I herd a loud clunk, then the transmission made a sort of rattling sound for about 3 months. You might have done what happened to me, chip a tooth of the gear and now there might be a chunk of metal floating around, which in the future will cause lots of problems. I can't really remember but I think Aamco Transmission will look at it for like $40.

Is this sound like a high-pitched whirring sound, and sometimes a gurgling sound when it's idling? My car shifts okay though, very smooth with that.. but I know I'm overdue for a welded LSD.

Edited to add gurgling/clicking sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBCgpszzYDo Seems to be in the vicinity of the tranny.

that's exactly what's wrong with mine and that's why I haven't driven the car for further than 1km since october. All the shops around here are CRAZY though. The cheapest quote I've received is 1000$ - the most expensive so far was 3500$ - s*** that's almost what the car is worth !!

from what i know these trannys have two types of output shafts. a short one and a long one. give me an offer i cant refuse and i will sell you one of my spare ones
