running open downpipe

yeah I ran open DP in my MSP. It was awesome... but eventually got old (ran it open for about a month or so).

The MSP's downpipe exits to the ground (left the S-pipe on, removed the J-pipe) so I didnt have any issues with wiring or otherwise in the vehicle.

The bad thing about running open DP is that you CANT quiet the car when needed as you could with an electronic exhaust dump. So, for me, riding through my neighborhood @ 3am even at idle could be heard throughout. It started to annoy me driving in the car (80mph drone gets really old really quick). It also tended to bring out more of the wannabe racers. They hear my car, think Im about streetracing, then taunt me to race.

I will admit though, hearing the turbo spool and wastegate blow off sounded AWESOME - not to mention the occasional backfire during downshifts... I definately want an electronic cutout... for me that would be the best of both worlds.

Oh - unless you have it rigged, you will eventually throw a CEL. It took a good 3 weeks for mine to throw, but it did end up happening.

i bottomed out one day and snapped my exaust in half. i could post a picture if it if you'd like. The soudn was sweet, but i felt no power gain what so ever.

It should not throw a cel on a ms3....its after all the o2 sensors with a stock downpipe. Both o2 sensors are in the downpipe.

Well dude, the exhaust would have way less back pressure. I'm guessing the O2 sensors read some of the outside air and go wacko.

i ran with an open DP for a couple of days it was when i went to the drag strip. i wouldnt do it long beacuse too much attention. and there are things you could burn down there. i had some proplems with it eating away at the heat shild i had to retape it before i reatached the exaust. im still looking to do a cutout exhaust.

i ran open dp for about 4 months and all i can say is it amazing. lost some low end tq but gained crazy topend power. the only reason i closed the exhoust back up was couse i put my wide band on the stock catted testpipe before the cat. so when ever i ran open dp i had to disconect the wideband. so one day i just cut the cat off the testpipe and just put back on the peice of pipe with the wideband. that way i could run open dp and still use my wideband. but by doing that the exhoust now flows parallel to the rest of the exhoust. so it started to rip and burn the heatsheild up couse its made of a foam like material with a thin layer of foil. but before with just the open dp the exhoust would flow down to the ground couse the dp is angled downward a bitt. other than that i loved running open dp.
hell i doynoed it open dp and made 290whp 311wtq on a mustang dyno.
my mods are ms cai,cpe standback @18psi, open dp.

My suggestion..is avoid running open downpipe.

1 it's to damn loud
2. it drone's really bad over 60mph
3. could potentialy damage something in the area..such as wiring..

I would suggest getting a cutout..this way you get the best of both worlds.

Also, cutout is much safer imho.

Well i have been running open DP for a lil over a week now and my suggestion is that you dont do it. When i put my test pipe back on this weekend i burned up some of that heat sheild and insulation under the car. The car felt like it pulled ALOT harder than it does now. But id rather be safe than sorry

this is my car open downpipe, i ran it only for a day since i gutted my second cat, i didnt run long because of fear of melting things under the car, my next mod is a qtp cutout and eventually getting either a 3 inch/2.5inch pipe running out to the left side of the car... sounds awesome and felt mroe power but i fear of melting s***, i wouldnt suggest it for more than a few days...

+1

I agree with clos561 wouldnt do it more than a few days unless you had a tip to point exhaust flow downwards. My heat shield got all messed up. Sounded great though. Everone at the track kept asking me to rev the engine
