Boost controller, any recommendation??

I would like to install a boost controller on my MS3, but I'm hesitating between the low cost MBC (manual boost controller) which is, in fact, only a valve or a EBC (electronic boost controller): a Greddy Profec B (a friend has one used for sale for about 160US)
like this one:

ANY ADVICE ON THIS? Is the EBC safer for my engine? This is my first turbo car and I want to avoid damage to my engine if possible.
the MBC is more simple to use but is it also more risked to use??

The profec has a spike controll on it, im not to familiar with the ms3 yet. The MBC will have a greater chance of boost spike, where as like I said the EBC will be able to control the spike to a certain extent.

you will want to go with a solid electronic boost controller on the ms3 and ms6, not an MBC. partially this is thanks to the factory boost control solenoid.

so that's why my MBC install instructions said to remove the factory boost control solenoid before install.. interesting.

The factory solenoid would be bypassed with either a MBC or a EBC if installed properly.. They both will work the same..The EBC depending on brand will have settings to limit spiking or features to learn..Spiking is not really hurting anything as is usually low in the rpms and we still have plenty of fuel left..The factory setup for me spikes to 16-17 and falls to 11-12.5 depending on gear..Personally I like the functions of a EBC but some are complicated to set properly..A MBC will give you constistant stable boost with minimal spiking if it is a quality product..Plus you will be able to take it out for warrenty work much easier. Most MBC are ball and sping designs and will hold any signal to the wastegate off until set boost is met..minimizing lag..

recomendation..

I recomend the Hallman for a MBC..many styles..some adjustable from the cockpit.. For the ECB the profec B...Most reliable, easiest to program..Best results...per Sport compact car and user reviews anyway.. I had the hallman pro on my 95 and 92 eclipse turbo and it worked nearly flawlessly..

wow this thread is dormant for a while. Well it's time to kick start it. I'm in the market for EBC, do I need a wideband o2 sensor to monitor the afr while using ebc?

i am of the mindset that when you start doing mods like this, turbo back exhaust, etc, wideband is a nice safety feature to have

(iagree) couldnt agree more. Its common sense but sometimes people learn the hard way, hope you got some short blocks ready Ken. lol

if i hear another bulls*** rumor about mbc/ebc causing damage on this car i just might snap. Get whatever the hell you want and crank it up to 17-18psi...youll be fine.

im referring to the 20+ psi crowd.. You know, people get addicted to raising boost Loosh. Its just a matter of time before someone goes over the top with it.

we've moved a half dozen since we started making them this year and have another on order. and everyone who has bought one has said thier stock engine blew while running rich. some were stock turbo, some were upgraded turbo. alot of the MSP owners when the car was new did the MBC/BCK combo, called the naysayers idiots and the cars ran great for a few months before motors started popping. i think the DISI engine is stronger for sure than the FS was but people do get greedy with boost. Plus you have different driving habits. Romping it at every stop light with any mods will affect a car differently than a person who just takes it to the track occassionally to beat on it. I don't think in the short term that 18psi with a boost cut killer is going to destroy these engines. But it is alot easier to pop these engines than what people initially thought.

Uncle Ben always said with great power comes great responsibility ;) [/end cheezy movie quote]

If your going the EBC route, I HIGHLY recommend the TXS DtecBC [standalone unit].

The features just cant be beat.

Dont listen to this guy he dont know s***. Lol just playing. Very respected member of the srtforums. He knows me as blacksrt311. Good guy and knows his stuff. I just purchased dtec for a car im building right now. Will be my first dtec experience. I hope its a good one.

Im looking to get the same one...i had a queston would i still need the FCD with that EBC??

I think so cuz without it, the ecu will recalculate the Boost pressure, will see that the pressure is over the factory limit and will turn the engine into "SAFE" mode, so the boost excess will be lowered automatically.

Hope my english was "understandable" LOL

off topic: what material did you used to get the FOG yellow colored??

i know a guy that is selling a boost controller and atp boost cut defender for 150, u would proly have to pay for shipping. he told me its turbo excess or access, im not sure how to spell it or which one it was. let me know if ur interested. he has a speed 3 and said that it would work on a speed6 or a speed3. if you live close to palm beach county he will install it for free. he is selling it because he has the cp-e ecu so he no longer needs the controller.
