while doing my brakes, i found a nail in my tire. it's a fairly new tire should I:
buy a new one (expensive)
or
buy a tire sealer and seal it?
any suggestions?
thanks in advance!

Don't put that nasty s*** in your tire. Get a tire plug kit & 12v air pump & be your own tire shop. Fixit & geaux more. I carry it with me, donuts suck as wheels. I plug the thing on the car,air it up & go if anything happens like that. Ucandoit. A small pr of pliers thrown in makes a great extraction tool.

go to a tire shop and have 'em patch it from the inside.. Way cheaper than a new tire, and will actually last.

So did the screw actually puncture the tire? I've had screws in tires that didn't actually do anything.

Take it to a tire shop and get it patched. Those plugs are OK. The tire sealer stuff is only for emergencies.

Hmmm, never had to plug same spot twice. Hadn't ever thrown one either but I guess @150 centrifugal force dictates the inner patch should stay in place better. You also have to get to a tire store AND it has to be during their work hrs after changing the tire or driving on a flat. Good luck on it happening in a convenient place & time. Not that a patch isn't a good thing.

fix-a-flat will eat away at the wheel, cause the tire to be way outta balance and more then likely WONT seal the leak. take it to a shop and have them use a patch/plug. it plugs the hole and patches the inside of the tire. its much safer then the rest of the options. have them rebalance the tire and youll be good to go. firestone does this for 24.99.....shameless plug (no pun intended) since i work there

On my last set of tires I had 7 patches in one and 3 in another, none in the other two. Now that I have new rims and tires I have gone a year without any problems. I don't know whats up with that, but I do know it wont hurt to have a tire repair shop fix your tire.

do what aMaff said xD but just watch ur psi cause it might cause a slow leak. had a nail in my tire and they put in a plug in from the inside but over a week or so, it dropped about 8psi

Which is why I have my own s*** with me to do it on the spot. Never had a plug throw the balance off, they just aren't that heavy. Never had one leak afterwards either. That's why you use the rubber cement to coat the plug before shoving it upntheya. Kit about 10.00, pump about 20.00, no smell no mess no hassle no driving on donut no wallet drain - priceless.

I had one leak.

When I bought the P5 one of the tires had been plugged like that by some previous owner. Of course I didn't know this. Every so often that damn tire would go flat suddenly. It wasn't a slow leak, it was all or nothing. I thought it was a bad valve but replacing the valve didn't help. Finally the plug was revealed when new tires were installed.

To the OP, take it to a tire shop and have them patch it. It's silly to risk a tire failure when the fix can be done right for just a few bucks.

but...you have to take the tire off to replace the valve... you're telling me the tire shop didn't notice that when they replaced the valve??

a lot of places cant leagally plug a tire if you have a low profile tire. Take it to a tire shop and have them patch it. Shouldnt cost you more than $20.

Like others said, just have a shop plug/patch it for you. It's worth it to put the donut on though. The shop I went to wanted to charge me 10 bucks to take the wheel off!! 20 to plug/patch. I just drove down the street and swapped the tire out in a parking lot, came back and had them fix it. Drove back to the parking lot and put it on. Took like 30 minutes for the whole deal.

I did plug the tire and it was okay... but oyu can tell and the tire is 'raised' where the plug is and the belts seperated to fit the plug in.

Low budget? Do the plug.

If you DO have the money - the inside patch IS better.

I replaced the valve, not the valve stem. Maybe I should have said valve core instead? Anyway, the valve screws out of the stem using a special tool like this one

and then a replacement is installed. The tire doesn't need to be dismounted to do this, although of course it does deflate. The valve I pulled out of the bad tire was actually bent a bit, so I thought that was the problem, but it turned out not to be. The auto parts stores sell both replacement valves and the valve tool and they were only a couple of bucks.

well imma go to the tire shop and patch it. thanks for everyones' suggestions. i knew i can trust you guys. thanks again!

Hm, just happened last week to me, the Firestone by my house patched it for 15.99. You boys in TN must have expensive labor! ;)

ok i got it done...and it was..... FREEEEEE! yes a tire shop called America's Tires fixes flat tires for free. Also, they said the nail was embedded on the tire but it never punctured the tire.
