burning oil like crazy... wtf?

HAHAHA nice.

1. Drive around for about 10 minutes to warm up engine.
2. Take all the spark plugs out (doing it all at once will expedite the testing)
3. Disconnect the wire harnesses for the coil packs and injectors (no, I don't know which harness is for the injectors, there should be one 'main')
4. screw the tester into cylinder 1.
5. Put foot on throttle so you're at WOT for 6
6. Foot on clutch. Crank a few times (I did 5 just for fun)
7. Write down number
8. Wash, rinse, repeat for 2-4

If it makes you feel any better, my FS-DE goes through 1 L every 200-250 km! My odometer is at 149000 km now. Oil consumption started in early 2006 (110000 km). I've done three compression tests over the past year, but the results always look good (170-180 psi). I haven't done a leakdown test yet so I'm looking into that.

Valve stem seals were replaced in April 2007, but that made no difference. I had the blue smoke on cold start last year (Oct 2006), but it mysteriously went away after a few days. Nowadays I get grayish-black smoke on acceleration, but nothing during idle.

I've replaced the PCV valve and inspect it regularly. PCV valve is working as designed.

I occasionally get rough idle and cylinder misfire. That's probably from too much oil in the combustion chambers and clogged EGR valve. When I remove the spark plugs for cleaning (this is a monthly ritual now), I see heavy carbon deposits on all 4 pistons. Cylinder #1 is the worst - I see oil reflecting back when I shine a flashlight down.

Urbanbiker brought up an excellent point about checking the timing. I went though my maintenance log and noticed that I also started experiencing oil consumption after changing the timing belt (Jan 2006). Thanks for the tip!

I've been having to replace my oil just as often as you and my compression was good. I was having misfiring ocasionally. I changing the intake cam to the performance one and I'm not sure if that coincided with the oil burning. I had Mazda check out the timing (because of the misfiring) but they said it looked fine, but they seemed to be doing a craptactular job inspecting my car, so I don't know how thoroughly they checked it out.

Hacker, any luck locating the problem?

Groan.....add me to the list too. (braindead :'(

No blue smoke.
Will begin inspection process....

A couple of weekends ago, my friend and I opened up the cylinder head cover to see if we could look at the valve stem seals without removing the camshafts. Unfortunately, the seals are so far down that it was impossible to see them. So we just cleaned up all the silicone around the cover (my mechanic put way too much silicone sealant around the cover). We also replaced the cover gasket.

Strangely enough, oil consumption was cut in half to 1L / 400 km! I also noticed the PCV valve is drier now.... which leads me to suspect that too much oil is splashing around in the top of the engine and going into the PCV system.

Anyway, I've ordered the cylinder leak tester (http://www.otctools.com/products/detail.php?id=1630) and waiting for it arrive. Hopefully the leakdown test will shed some more light.

I fixed my problem!!!

I was burning 2L of oil every gas fill-up. The stealership said my timing was fine (and charged me $300). I knew I had put in the performance intake camshaft recently and it seemed to coincide with the oil burning so I went ahead and pulled off the valve cover myself. The intake camshaft was one tooth off (valve was opening too late, my bad, I was more exacting this time, but apparently it looked ok to the dealership too). I fixed that and the smoke problem instantly went away! (headbang)

did it burn a whole bunch when you first start it up after its been sitting all night?

Me? No, letting it sit overnight didn't really make a difference for me. That's a good point, my seals weren't actually leaky, it was the intake stroke trying to pull through a closed valve that drew the oil through.

someone told me it could be a leaky valve stem seal? i dont think it could be head gasket cuz theres no oil in my coolant and no coolant disappearing mysteriously... dealership is convinced that its from worn piston rings

do a leakdown test, that'll tell you for sure what's leaking.

um no. not even close. keep dreaming. I guarantee you will still have to fill up 2L at your next fill up(cool)

no. stop going to that dealer now. its leaky valve seals, not head gasket. damn you people need car friends.

the valve seals leak oil from the head gally onto the pistons and then imnediately burns it off at start up (hence the smoke at start up) then continues to leak duing normal operation. (birthday)have a fun head job
