Yet another Turbo thread, not what you think though!

They're 40-50 a rebuild plus 35 to have it rebalanced. You can also use Garrett journal bearing internals for a little bit more

I will gladly spend 200 on a eBay turbo and rebuild it every 10-20k miles than 1000-1500 on a ball bearing turbo that's 600-800 to rebuild

Clearly this is just my opinion an may not mean anything to op or you. Some people just refuse to put anything from eBay on their cars. But for the price difference ill deal with it
 
It's a hard choice to make for me. Keep my paid off 99 LX and make it look pretty with minimal pep. Or get a msp or mp3 and make payments plus fixing up. It's hard to choose. I need a better job! Lol
 
Mp3 is still rediculously slow. As in its dead even with a 92-95 civic that's bone stock with a d16a6. I think they make 115 hp
 
Well I may think this is a stupid question, but how knows, is anybody on this forum that has 1.6 Protege and has put 15psi or more on it with a t3/t4 turbo?
 
With that big of a turbo on 15 psi I would say you should at least have a spare motor just in case. But I doubt it will hold it
 
Yes, with ease. Thought you meant stock motor lol. I personally wouldn't waist time with the 1.6 unless its a b6t or b6ze. Do a bpt swap I can guarantee you will be happy with it
 
A 1.6L motor (ZM/ZL) can hold boost up to 18psi on a GT2554R with stock internals. With forged, this engine could easily pull out 400whp... but the tranny would not. I know you can put a Quaife LSD in it but the gears are weak. A friend boosted his 1.6 ZM to over 350whp and put a 1991 protege GT tranny... on the 1/8 mile, it's faster than his 800hp stang!!!

Because it hooks up. Launch is everything in 1/8 miles I launched my car easy and ran a 10.3 but trap speeds were higher than the low 9s people

Interesting so this engine can make power! that for sure! the thing is having the right mods to support it! do you know what tranny upgrades are required?
 
Now this is getting interesting. Also making it harder to choose between cars. Lol although it would be super to keep the car I have already so I don't have to she'll out more money for another car plus fix it up. I most likely don't need a 18 psi car. I just want something quick for now and looks good! I love my car so much and hate to part with it. And yes yes I know it's a waste if time. But I really would like to know if its possible. And sounds like it is possible. I did read the make your own boost kit page for the 1.6 and I think that's a good starting point. I am gaining more friends here where u live that know about tuning and boosted cars. So I will learn the ways soon I hope. Please keep info coming here though! :)
 
Now that I've a actually thought about it, I'd like to see this 350 hp on stock internals put down a time of under 6 seconds in the 1/8. The 500-650 hp mustangs in my area run high 5s to low 6s. My 400 hp mustang ran 6.8-7.0 depending on weather. Now when you take that into consideration and add in the fact that there's a 600 whp civic that can't break out of the 8s because all it does is spin I makes me highly doubt a 1.6 protege is runing that fast much less making 350 hp on stock internals, because let's face it a small google search you will see no 1.6 making that amount of power on stock internals

And also gt2554 starts super heating air at 14-16 psi, I'd love to know what his iats were.

So I want vids of this car making passes in less than 7 seconds. With a 1.6. With a t25. With stock internals. Cause I'm pretty sure if the 1.6 could handle 350 hp stock all the. 2.0 guys would have swapped to it by now. I'm not calling you a liar by any means but I'm saying its highly unlikely
 
My 1.6 ALWAYS beat my friend's civic D16....hands down. The protege is heavier too. Its mainly all in the gearing.

My auto 2.0 is nose to nose with an auto 1.8 Integra. Interesting I know...but true.

When I test drove the MSP, It was a blast. a hell a lot faster than my 1.6 was. Between first and second gear, it scratches the tires. Impressive.

(On closed roads of course) that msp I test drove i was able to shoot up to 130 mph...a little more room to go. Impressive.

The mp3 I found in the junk yard....I snagged the front strut tower bar and the front and rear racing beat sway bars...along with the "MP3" engine cover and the front MP3/P5 bumper
 
It is always a risk to buy a turbo car. Its guaranteed it was beat on. Nobody buys turbo cars (especially proteges since younger folks drive them) and "not" beat on them.

Some are beat on worse than others.

Best thing to do is just buy a msp with a few bolt ons and upgrade from there. the steedspeed manifold appears to be one of the favorite upgrades since the stock manifolds crack.

The garret turbo can be upgraded to a t28 and youll get a little more power. FMIC and it should get a better kick. The MSP i drove I wanted because it had everything stock down to the SMIC...but they wanted about $10,000 and its only worth $7800 retail. Wouldn't budge on price.

The "fast" 1.6 I'm talking is way far from stock. He's got forged miata pistons at a low comp ratio (8.0:1 I think) with a thicker head gasket because miata forged internals made the pistons go higher than the block deck of a few milli-inches (0.00X") with a bigger turbo than a GT2554R (I don't remember wich one), and a lot of goodies...

I'm not here to lie or BS anyone, if you don't believe me... just don't.

I'm just saying that 1.6L (ZM-ZL) has a lot of power potential but few people had tried it in a protege because at first there was no aftermarket support and even now it's pretty hard to find parts for this setup. I even had to fabricate myself some custom part like my manifold, downpipe, ECU, fuel, rail, etc...

again. its all in the gearing. I've had a 70 hp festiva beat a 110 hp cavalier. againnnnnnnn....all in the gearing.
 
I thought you meant it was with stock internals making 350. Low compression will make a huge difference. How else do you think a stock 7.9:1 b6t will hold well over 300 whp all stock, but clearly a bigger turbo than stock

Any built motor can put down a lot of power. And yes gearing makes everything especially on na cars. Look at the civic si and b16 trans missions. I had an si trans in my civic with 90hp d15 and pulled on an integra all the way to 80. Not sure how well y'all's knowledge of Hondas are but the h2b swaps are rediculous h22 (2.2 liter) with a trans that will bounce off the rev limiter at 120 in 5th. I have a video of one pulling away from my 323 by about 6 cars. About the same amount of power, 2100lb car ( with driver) short geared trans. That thing caught me way off guard
