why is my MSP so damn slow?

ok.. I already know the answer to this question.. its ME... I dont really know how to drive this car yet.. I see on my "kill list" thread ppl beating all sorts of s*** that I KNOW would kill me..
some dude said I should be beating preludes with intake and exhaust... well, I got KILLED by my friends stock prelude...

so what do I do?? teach me to drive my MSP ha ha...

when you launch,, what do you launch from?? I have tried 3.5k and 4k... not to much wheel spin.. then I shift at 6k all gears... (doesnt power drop off after that?)

I dont shift slow,, I actually shift fast... but it just seems like I am loosing RPM's.. what can be done here??

today I raced my friends GSX eclipse (awd turbo) and lost too... I must be doing somthing wrong...

I shift right around 5.5 to 5.6k RPM's, in frist through 3rd,anything after that and the Torque drops off bad. Remember the first 1/8th mile is a race of torque, the last is h.p. so I run 4th and 5th to redline. Hope that helps in that dept.

As far as launching, I really have not found any RPM Im comfortable with launching with, 3.5 is what Im doing right now, and satying consistant, but dont know for sure till I get to the test and tune nite thursday.

lol your hit the fuel cut/rev limiter there, just do it quick enough to not let the RPM's drop below 3k. That is where the torque band is for the MSP. trust me, just practice (in a safe legal spot) an d it will come. I havent driven my MSP for the past week, and didnt miss a shift on my way home from the dealer. :D

umm.. so you were joking about not letting off the gas right.. ha ha...

so do we all agree about the 5.6 shifting??

No, actually I wasnt kidding, When racing I don't let off the throttle. It sometimes will hit the rev limiter, but not a big deal, its there so the engine won't over rev. If you shift at 5.5, then you are letting the RPM's drop out of a usable range, and you will lose everytime. You need to get the RPM's high enough so when you shift, they stay in the upper power band. if you shift fast enough and at the right RPM, when you push the clutch in the RPM's will raise to a certain point before hitting redline. The trick is practice shifting and letting the clutch out before that point. You can shift at 5.5, but you need the RPM's up further before letting that clutch back out. The fastest way is not letting go of the throttle.

Power shift maybe, and note about what you said about the prelude he said you should be able to beat it with an intake and exhaust do you have this done yet? I doubt he ment a prelude with an intake and exhaust. I have a prelude the msp cant beat one with an intake and exhaust trust me at least the 93-96 vtech models, the 92 doesnt have a vtech and some came with 4 wheel steering which only comes stock with 130hp while the other comes with 160hp with 160tq, the 93-96 has 190hp and 160tq., and the 97 and 98 have 195hp same torque, and finally the 99's to 2001's gain 5hp oooh big woop. Anyway, the prelude have the same torque as our cars however dont suffer from turbo lag, you definately can be the 92 four wheel steering version and any model prior to 92, as for the 160hp 92 version maybe, thats what I have and I dont know from driving both its close. As for the rest I highly doubt being about to beat them, unless if you did do some work. Sorry if I caused lots of confusion

Hrrrmmm, I would do that, if I had a Stand Alone, like the AEM, that would not allow over a certain RPM while the clutch is pushed in, but me personally would not try that.

Not saying your wrong, I just dont like hitting the Fuel Cut, as it will take the ECU a hiccup or 2 to get back into the proper fuel delivery map, and again, as long as you stay above 3k, you will hit boost almost immediatly, and will hit peak torque at 3.6k. :D

So there ya go. 2 different styles. I would suggest trying both maybe, and seeing what you are most comfortable with.

Oh and as for the eclipse yeah you wouldnt beat that, its awd, no tire spin, and from what I just checked the 90 to 94 ones have 195hp and 203tq, and from 95 to 99 they have 210hp and some have 205tq and some go up a little with torque. They have more torque and horsepower than us not to mention no slow start times.

the power range is strong till redline
don't dump the clutch
slip the clutch longer and harder than you would ever do in a N/A car
shift at redline as fast as your foot will move (you have a short shifter sparco knob and peddals right)
and raise the boost to 10 psi
you will get to "Umm, 65" faster than most cars in a 26,000 dollar price range

I pulled on one 97 up one with intake exhaust 1 2 cars
stock one 4 5 cars
92 96 vtec with who knows how much s*** 1 car
umm dont tell me i cant beat preludes......
come to dallas ill show u how i launch and drive.....
if ur not pulling 15.3s at least ur not launching or shifting at the right rpm...im pullin at most 3500 rpm and gettin off the clutch where it barely peels off slightly... and for the kill list add a bunch of honda and eclipses.....

Ill tell you why his car is so slow. He got screwed just like the rest of us by Mazda's sorry ass fuel map. My car runs great some times, but more often then not it runs like crap. I barely pulled on an MP3 the other day in the hot sun. Ive come to the conclusion that it was BS to pay 20K for a car that runs the way ours do. I mean I know its a complete package, but it should run better or at least more constantly. Im getting Pissed with this substandard tuning & performance! Thats why my s*** is sitting at the shop right now and I have to drive an auto Protg DX. Hell the DX runs just as good when my Speed is on the rag! Sorry, but at some point we have to vent about the Bad hand that Mazda / Calloway dealt us. UHHHH!

 (pissed) (argh) (flame) (bang) (mspb) (gun)

i second that about the inconsistent performance...i say mazda gives us free GREDDY EMS and e01 boosted at 10 psi like it should have been at the factory

i have found that my launches arent that great either, and i launch at around 3. the stock power band on the FSDE starts at about 3800 or 4000, so if you shift at 6 all the time it will take your rpms down to about between 4 and 5, and thats when our motors begin to pull. just practice. you dont want to just dump the clutch all the time. figure out where the bite point of the clutch is, and ease between clutch. a little wheel spin is good, but make sure when you hit the gas your rpms go up to 4 and just start going. practice man, practice.

another thing to keep in mind, our cars aint drag cars, they are much better for touring and autocross. just practice.

I also have noticed the inconsistancy of my MSP.. some times it runs really good.. others,, hesitation, lack or power, etc.... WTF? you think mazda would have like,, noticed that....

I know this question has been asked a million times,, but what can be done about this?

Wait two more weeks for the new map that Mazda Supposedly will have. I guess you can't run the car when it's on the rag. Talk about having to pick you battles.

:wtf: :bs: (guns) Mazda Engineers (gun)
