2010 mazda5
from what I read the 06-07 mazda5 have this problem with mad rear tire wear
so if I end up with 08 09 mazda5 im free of this problem

also the 2010 mazda5 is the only year of mz5 with a typical oil filter

you can always upgrade to the spin on oil filter housing if you have a model with the cartridge style

I would not say that you would be "free" of the tire wear issue, just that it is reduced in the 08-10 models.

The culprit is agressive OEM suspension tuning in order to give you that zoom-zoom driving experience. They dialed it back a bit on the 08-10 models, so it is less agressive.

My 2009 had some really crappy tire wear in the rear (bought it with 52k miles on it, new tires screwed up after 4k), but that was from the crappy shocks that Mazda put on them from the factory. Swapping out the rear shocks with higher quality units (better damping) is pretty easy- maybe an hour or two in your garage with hand tools and a jack- and pretty cheap depending on what shocks you want to get.

You can always get an alignment shop to dial out most of your rear toe to reduce scrub in the back too. Just be aware that the aggressive alignment settings are one of the things that make the car so much fun to drive.

2009 models built after June 1, 2009 have a canister oil filter, but changing the oil on a cartridge type filter is not hard once you do it once or twice. I actually prefer it now because I can look at the filter to make sure there are no pieces of metal or whatever in it.
