I was just wondering what compressor surge was. i have a turbo mp3 and i have been havin a prob. with my turbo xs BOV leaking at idle cause the piston isn't fuly closed, and i was wondering if i might be experiencing compressor surge at all with this problem.

Centrifugal and axial compressors will surge when forward flow through the compressor can no longer be maintained, due to an increase in pressure across the compressor, and a momentary flow reversal occurs. Once surge occurs, the reversal of flow reduces the discharge pressure or increases the suction pressure, thus allowing forward flow to resume again until the pressure rise again reaches the surge point.

This surge cycle will continue until some change is made in the process or compressor

does anyone know how i can tell if i am experiencing compressor surge or if the BOV is actually releasing the air properly? cause i know that the bov is stuck open a little bit at idle. like by sound ? etc...

well thats a vacuum leak..you should see fluctuations in your RPMs at idle, and probably a near stall condition when you put your car in neutral while moving...If the vacuum leak is that severe, your idle will be drastically affected.

Do you have a boost gauge? You should really try to get your hands on a mechanical one, they are not that expensive and do a great job.
