The big question

Sounds like you are going through with the deal so welcome to the club!

But out of curiosity, what major repairs were due for the '08 Jetta?

yep, I did it! Silver 08. Will post pics soon

There was more variables then just wanting a new car and I'll throw those in so everyone understands where I came from.

For starters I drive 100 miles a day for work and we often visit my family nearly 2 hours away every other week.

The jetta, a 5 speed had 107 on the clock and the problems were:
-nearing timing chain replacement ($3k repair)
-one of two cooling fans kept shorting out
-wiring in drivers door was falling apart. ( had the door panel off 3 times soldering wires) shorted out out window motors.

I'm not car tard-ed. I do own a torq wrench and a spring compressor. That being said, vw's are not for the do it your-selfer back yard mechanic...

my wife, 17 weeks prego can't drive a stick. Not cause she doesn't want to, but because she has terrible knees. Just before we found out about a baby on the way she was looking into knee replacement.

Currently she drives an 04 4runner v8 (lifted 3"). My goal was to get something the both of is can drive, be baby friendly and get good mileage.

I know i took a hard hit $$$, but I think i can justify the it with the would be repairs to the jetta and the utility from the 5.

Yesterday I was offered a 98 civic lx with 140K for $800. clean, runs great. I'm picking it up for my daily 100 mile grind to and from work.

Congrats on the silver 5. Sounds like you two have many new changes in your live now, and more to come.

So I'm guessing the 4Runner is going to spend alot of time holding down the driveway pavement? Good deal on the Civic thats for sure. Should definitely make up for the hit on the Jetta. I DO hope you got GAP on that upside down loan!
