Testing Waters for New Exhaust

Hey All,

I'm feeling the waters out for a new product for our MSP's. In my quest for a cheaper alternative to a good sounding exhaust, I have come upon the solution!!! I hooked up with an exhaust shop here in memphis and we put my car up on the rack and went to work. We cut off the axle back just foward of the flange. We then searched and found an afermarket tip that has a rolled edge and is almost identical to the mazdaspeed tip on our stock mufflers (it looks better but doesnt have mazdaspeed on it.) we then took the measurments and welded it up, and viola!! It looks badass, isnt raspy, its actually deep throughout the entire powerband. I took it up to mazda and they said that they hadnt heard one that sounded that good yet

Anyway, To make this a sale worthy item that just about anybody can bolt up to their car, myself and Greg (agr 7) are going to the shop in the morning and were going to use his car to make a jig for the "Cancel Pipe" so that we can re-produce an excellent pipe that will be shipped ready to bolt up. Were going to do that tommorrow morning and ill post more on it like PICS!! and prices. Right now, The pipe, show quality and ready to bolt up, will be about $80 shipped. Like I said, ill try to get pics and a testimonial up tommorrow when AGR drives mine and shares his mind (shouldn't take long "lol") j/k greg!!! anywho, please post questions and/or comments. THANKS!!!!! Sorry for the longass post

Im assuming this does nothing for performance, just sounds better right.
In that case maybe a sound clip would be right..
It may be in my interest to pay $80 for better sound for now, being that $1050 for a turbo back is just out of my way right now..

Actually, I'm sure it relieves some backpressure which allows the turbo to spool a little bit earlier and yes, it sounds freakin bad ass!!! Better than any exhaust I've ever heard on another turbo car. I think the fact that it only costs $80.00 shipped is very much worth it because $1100 is a little too much to spend for a decent sounding exhaust.

First thing tommorrow, you got it man. Ive got to make sure greg can bring his camera in order to do it, but im sure he'll want to document the work on his own car as well. I'll try to get him to take some cool shots of his car before and after from the same angles and all (2thumbs)

well, AGR#7 and I did alot of work on his ride and he got the chance to drive my car and listen to the exhaust for the first time today. He also got some great pics of the "Beta" version of the exhaust. Keep in mind the final product will be a simple bolt on modification. Pics are coming sometime today (thumb)

photos of stock & beta exhaust

Photos taken of Corey's 'Beta' exhaust, and my stock exhaust. The 'new' tip is more rounded than the flatter MAZDASPEED tip, but it looks great. The sound of this exhaust is mean- real MEAN!!!! I really like the sound a lot. We hope to get mine done next Saturday. What's missing? The muffler is removed - that's it! With this set-up; you will be able to swap back to stock in just a few minutes. Very cool! Good work, Corey!! (thumb)

Flange on my car. The new exhaust will connect like this... (note: the stock tip is a bit flatter)

Dude!!! Those came out great (2thumbs)

Alan, I worked a deal out with these guys and we can get the pipes, ready to bolt up, no welding necessary (all flanges and hangers included) for $80 shipped. We went up there today to Get the measurements taken adn the guys were so swamped that were going to try again next saturday first thing in the morning. I'll get with them hopefully saturday morning and I'll have them make the jig and from there we can start turning them out quickly. I will take pre-paid orders for these since I have to pay them for in advance for supplies and all (they already ordered 10 of the tips.) Post here and e-mail me with your information if you are interested. (rockon)

Thanks Corey!

I appreciate all of your help today with the MBC, etc... A big time today, for sure!!

I Love My (higher PSI) MAZDASPEED!!! (k) (k) (k)

Well

Say AGR ask that homey of yours how much weight this saves over the stock muffler setup.

I am interested. I will buy the full 3'' setup next year but for now that is what I would call a Joe approved low buck mod.
Like the FPR, MBC, and FCD.

Basically; your losing the weight of the muffler, and adding the weight of a length of pipe. Maybe we can weigh mine next weekend, after the mod. The sound is quite excellent. (thumb)

Any chance of getting an audio file uploaded of this?? I'm not knocking the idea, cause it would definately hold me over till I get my JIC(or a turbo-back) but I want to make sure it isn't too loud, or raspy...I don't want to rice out the MSP. Just to make sure I understand this correctly, is this considered a rear section?? I will just unbolt the axle-back Racing Beat, and this bolts up to the flange?

How loud is this setup? Is it like the SRTurd-4? Will it drive me nutz on a daily basis. Sounds cool, and I bet not having a muffler will get you a few HP, but I don't want the cops in my small town tracking me by the noise.

If you want to test the sound just remove the two bolts at the over axle connection...that's what it will sound like :)

LOL...Oh yeah...I can't believe I even asked that(smash)

The stock Racing Beat muffler is a heavy motherf'er.; im willing to bet it ways between 35-40 lbs but ill weigh it soon. The pipe, tip, hangers, and welds and all weigh no more than 10lbs. the heaviest part of the assembly is the tip. About an audio file, i dont know how but if you go out to your driveway and unbolt your axle back, thats pretty much what it will sound like. but i will say this, it will have more interior resonance than the pipe because unbolted it points straight up at the bottom of the car.

I'm definitely interested in this mod until full performance d/p and exhaust mods are readily available, but I would also like to hear a sound clip, perhaps back-to-back with a sample clip of the stock muffler for comparison. That would make my decision much easier. From a performance perspective, does the stock muffler really add enough back pressure to improve performance by removing it? Anyone know?

Peace...(hippy)

I can do a movie/sound clip of the Exhaust mod...

I know I can do a 30 second movie with 'sound' with my Olympus. I will get together with Corey (maybe next weekend when my exhaust is done), and film one of our cars with the sound. I have never posted one of these movie clips, however, to share online.

Let's put it this way. As far as the sound of the MAZDASPEED with this mod; I have heard 'ricer', raspy, fart-can exhaust on Hondas, etc... THIS is not that sound. It's deep, throaty, and serious. I am 49 years old, and when Corey first told me about it, I was skeptical (a louder exhaust, I would want; but nothing 'ricey', for sure). We met up yesterday morning in a mall parking lot to check out this new mod, before we went and installed my MBC. So; I listened as he made some passes. Hard acceleration, etc... I drove it, taking it through the gears, out on the road over 60mph. Windows - windows down. I can live with it. At certain rpm ranges it is louder inside the car, of course. At highway speeds, it sounds nice. On hard acceleration - awesome! Of course; it's all in what your looking for.

You certainly hear it in the car. I think, it was around 2,500 rpm or so, it is louder. I will check more closely later in the week. Corey and I are getting together for lunch one day, and I will take note of it.

When it spools up (from outside the car), it is marvelous!
