to answer the ORIGINAL question; the Mazdaspeed Protege handles statistically better in every category (ie - skidpad, lane change high speed, stopping distance, body roll, etc.) Sport Compact Car has rated the MSP hands down as being the "best handling front wheel drive car ever produced." If that's not high praise then I don't know what is.
to go along with the quality question; the Ford Focus (as sold in the United States) is statistically one of the flimiest, cheapest built and faultiest vehicles on the road. Check with the National Highway Safety and Transportation Admin; you'll find a slew of technical service bulletins, warnings and recalls. Simply not a good car, devoid of any sense of lasting build quality.
