Stuck in 4th gear?

I came across a guy who was parting out his 5spd '02 Protege5, I inquired about the entire car and was told no parts have been taken other than the radio. He further said that the vehicle was stuck in 4th gear. I went and checked it out. Interior was in excellent shape, a normal amount of rust, nothing too bad to repair. Exhaust was completely rusted out but the rest of the under body looked good. I started it up to get a first hand understanding of the gear issue. The shifter freely moves but like it was described it wouldn't shift and wouldn't go into reverse. I took a chance and purchased it for a couple hundred bucks. I called up my mechanic this morning and he said it sounds like a fork has been snapped. He said I should replace the transmission or buy a new fork and have it installed but it may cost more than to purchase and install a new transmission.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what I should do?

Cheers!

find a good used transmission, many on the forum have done this. i believe the sedan and hatchback use same 5 speed tranny(someone correct me if i am wrong) so should be fairly easy to find a good used one in a junkyard or around the forum. either way if you go used put in new gear oil, and obviously check it over 100% before buying. and whether or not you go new or used tranny, get a new clutch kit and put it in while your down there, as well as flywheel. labor wont be much, if any more and you get all refreshed parts.
