starving for fuel

My 2000 protege starves for fuel at half a tank. I replaced the fuel pump but i still have the problem. Any ideas?

why would you think its starving for fuel? symptoms?

The car looses power and behaves as tho its not getting any fuel. I press the gas peddle and no response. If i shake the car i can get response but only for a moment. after this behavior starts,it will die completely within 5 miles or so. when i first replaced the puump and my husband filled the tank to the VERY top, the check engine light went out. it stayed out til about 3/4 tank and then at half tank, the starving symptoms kick in. as long as i keep the tank topped off, everything runs great.

sounds like the pump may not have been installed correctly, and its sucking from where its not supposed to.

we did pull the whole housing back out and reseat but i didnt think to pull the pump out of the housing and verify it. i will try that today. it is odd that this prob. only occurs once i get to half a tank. i do hear what sounds like sucking air at that time also. what about a pin hole in a line. what about the fuel bag (filter) thats attached at the bottom of the housing. that thing seems simple but is i am going to pull the housing back out again, what other things should i pay attention to

make sure all the fuel lines are good, and not leaking. make sure all the fuel filler hose connections are, in fact, connected. make sure the fuel filler cap is seated...
