sagging radio = DIN cubby thing won't open/close

so i bought my msp used, the guy before me apparently didn't do a great job taking care of it. i just finished fixing the horrible job he did wiring the security, and now it's onto other cosmetic issues.

first off - the radio. he swapped the stock HU (no shock), and left the cubby. for some reason, these sag. the cubby door won't close and i have to kind of push the radio bezel up to get it shut. it's a real ******* pain and looks like s***.

i took the trim off the console, which makes both, especially the radio, sag worse. i dont know what kind of support was in there from the factory, but theres nothing right now. it looks like the weight of the radio just pulls it downward.

has anyone ever seen this, or know how to fix it?

oh, and for you gauge guys, i havent seen this one on here yet... he left his AFR gauge, which was mounted in the passenger cupholder. cool but i could really use that second cupholder... there's pretty big holes cut in it, so i have to replace the cupholder assembly. is there any way to get one other than from mazda? i.e. are they ever in the market place?

look in the fs section, pretty sure i've seen some cup holders for sale.

Was the support bar there for the radio/pocket? Also the back of the pocket should have a support on it (you can see it in the pic)

looks like this:

the clip was busted off the back of the cubbie, and i have no idea where the support bar goes. it didn't look like it went through the space, and it didn't look like it screwed onto the cubby itself.
where the hell does this thing go?

Check your local junkyard for parts.

i wish i was smart enough to think of these things. all proteges use the same holders?

the support bar would be between the radio and pocket. has a screw on each side. if the radio is out you should be able to see it, if its there. Marked w/ red line.

yeah, no bar there. i see the screw holes, but no bar.

i think i'm just going to fab a new bar, along with a hook to screw into the top of the cubby.
but i'm going to need a couple dimensions...
Bar Dimensions
outside diameter?
and i assume, when installed, the bar portion points into the compartment, leaving the other side flush along the face

Hook Dimensions
so i think the first thing to do would be to get a picture of the side of the cubby, with hook attached. i can't tell right now, for example, if the hook points up or down.

i'll take a look at it and hopefully won't need any exact measurements.

yeah, saw that... really not interested in spending that kind of money when i'm going to throw gauges in there sometime in 2010.

think you could hook me up with a pic of the side of the jhook though?
