ran horrible times at the dragstrip

Mazdaspeed 6
Ok last summer I ran a 14.8@93.48 with test pipe, 3"catback, fujitia intake, rear solid motor mount. 2.21 60's gentle launch no powershifting.

This year with jbarone short throw kit and cobb AP i first ran a 16.1@92.4MPH. I forgot to turn traction control off 2.55 60' and grinded 2nd gear.

followed by 15.7@92.7 2.3 60'

After this, i let the car sit facing the wind with hood open between each run -- notice my trap speeds got a lot better

Then a 15.5@94.5 2.0 60' but grind 2nd gear

last 15.0@96.8 2.1 60' shifted gentle to avoid grind.

On the road the car feels a lot stronger, so i dont know if it was heat soak or what... car felt non turbo on the first two runs. I love jbarone shifter on the street but i think it needs some tuning because 2nd and 3rd did not feel right. especially since i kept missing 2nd. next tax return i am going to get ETS TMIC and catted downpipe -- then ill be done until my turbo blows.

wow man that is some crappy times. are you using the launch control and FFS on your ap? was there a really strong head wind that day?

and if you having a hard time getting into second, i would think something is wrong. is it like that all the time or only when you drive hard?

Never had a problem getting into 2nd on the street but at the track i was trying to bang them pretty hard. All the way to the track my car felt pretty good but once i got to the track --- waiting in line, TMIC heatsoaking it felt very weak. soon as i left the track it felt good again. I never realized how much the TMIC hurts our drag strip times. Next time ill bring ICE :-)

Casual driving the jabrone feels great but i read there was a thread "must read" for adjusting your shifter. Cobb still hasnt sent me the download link for Launch control and FFS shifting -- there was a headwind but felt minor to me.

An LS1 GTO with full exhaust, intake, slicks, and dyno tuned ran 12.87@103mph I thought even his MPH seemed low.

Then a black 99+ mustang 4.6 v8 ran a 14.4@93mph. Unlike my previous cars this turbo car is much harder to drive IMHO. launch is to much clutch slip or it bogs. very fine line to get a perfect launch. Then between shifts if im not quick enough i get a tiny bit of turbo lag between shifts which hurt.

I got my runs on video but im to embarrased to post them lol. especially the 16.1.... you can see traction control kick in, my nose just dives.

there is a way to adjust the shifter to accommodate the ssp.
go look it up on youtube.

as for the times, i would have to agree with you, as even with my mods, my car does not seem much faster then stock.

It kills me that i am struggling to break into the 14s but i have no trouble walking cars that are in the 13's. This Mazdaspeed 6 is pretty much my wifes car that i pay for and drive once in awhile. Last year I had a Formula Firebird 6 speed. LT1, full exhaust, intake, dyno tuned. made 277whp at baker auto. Ran 13.8@102mph at the drag strip. My mazdaspeed 6 (without the COBB AP) not only felt much slower but hung dead even with the firebird from a 20-80mph roll.

My speed 6 walked a 350z last year too from a roll... then only trapped at 93.48mph? Heatsoak has to kill these cars... i dont know what else it could be.

Im just going to toss this out there, but it seems like you may have some issuse with using the ap.

heat soak with the stock tmic kills power. the ets sheds the heat much faster which helps as the track. you can let it heat soak, then blast down the road about 1 block distance and the ets will be cool to the touch.

but it still hampers quarter mile times none the less.

what i don't get is how he added an access port and a short shifter and ran almost a second slower on his second attempt.

thats whats eating at me as the main problem. i doubt the tmic is the problem as much didn't change except for the tune.

i agree, and just dont understand either.

i ran a 14.6@95?96? something like that. last year with an cpe nano(for an ms3) and a rear mm. that was with a terrible launch cause i suck at drag racing.

i have the slips around here somewhere to prove it. but i never brought it up till now cause its pretty lame time. buttons, man i dunno what to tell you other than dont let it get you down.
like you said the car runs great and pulls hard and kick ass all that, so go with it. if you really want to get a better time then head back to the track and hit it some more. you gotta lay a better time down sooner or later. just takes a little practice.

I know my car is a lot quicker WITH the cobb then without it. Yes my drag strip experience today does not back that up. I can feel a big difference in power on the street -- not to mention I can run it out to 6500rpms instead of 5500 which i think is a big deal in itself.

My first two passes I trapped at 92.5mph. then i popped my hood and trapped 95mph. then i popped my hood and let it sit even longer and trapped 97. a 5mph difference between runs is huge. These cars run horrible times because your TMIC heatsoaks while your waiting in line waiting your turn to run. on the street you dont get heatsoaked because your not in stop and go traffic and then all the sudden race.

The Track and street are totally different environments. last year at Martin i thought my car felt week too but i never considered heat soak. i waited in line an hour before it was my turn to race. i never popped the hood, i did shut the car off while waiting but the heat was still trapped under the hood. I recommend people bring ice with them and cool your IC just before your turn to go. i bet you pick up a few mph and rip out of the hole a lot harder to boot. I always thought ICE was cheating because i like "run what you brung" however on the street your not handicapped with no air flow before getting into the throttle.

Fastest trap without cobb: 93.48
Fastest trap with cobb: 97

so there is a power difference, the car runs smoother too with cobb.

Whats the sea level there? Elevation plays a huge part as well. I would think its all the heatsoak as stated by others on here.

I wont bother dragging my car to see how fast it is at the track its pointless for me since its not a real world app. Varying factors always play a key role.

I might run it someday but again Im not much of a drag guy..

Its quite funny really I have had several cars some were easier to drive than others at the track.

My bone stock 95 acura gsr ran a 15.0 at 92.3 When I gutted it it ran the exact same 15.0 but at almost 94.4.

My 290 HP FC rx7 I only got like a 14.4 and a 14.5 my 60 foots were horrendous like 2.6 plus my traps were like 107-110.

I suck I guess

i think the elevation is around 800-1100ft. I am not going to worry about my crappy times to much because outside of the dragstrip my car performs up to my expectations.

are you turning the dsc off?

well while i was waiting in line i shut my car off... on my first pass i forgot to turn the DSC back off and did a 2.55 60' . i launched at like 3700 and then all the sudden the car bogged really bad (obviously) the last three passes dsc was off. The last two passes my launch felt strong to me but they still need some work. not sure how people get 1.7/1.8 60'...

it still seems like you should trap higher. i have bad launches often and still trap upper 90's.

assuming you had the mods in your sig i would expect you to trap higher too. I have stock downpipe and stock TMIC. those are two big power adders.
