ram air

does anyone know details on how restrictive the stock air box is? i was thinking of making a ram air system using the factory box and just putting a k&n in it. seems that the pressure of the ram air would over rule and restritions that the box caused. the same type of flat filter is used on ram air versins of the firebird and camaro so it seems like it woudl work pretty well. anyone else have any kind of info on this type of mod?

I suggest removing the resonator box sitting off the intake piping. It is a big black plastic box that leads down off the intake piping and merely dampens the sound of the intake. Also it has holes in the bottom of it to let out any water that may get trapped in it. The problem you maybe be having is when forcing air into the intake tubing, you create a high pressure area along the pipes, but when it reaches this offshoot of a resonator, there is a low pressure area, so it just goes into the resonator loses it's force. Some fault being the dramatic change in direction, others being the holes in the resonator. Just disconnect and remove this plastic box, and plug up the hole on the bottom of the piping. CAUTION: When plugging up the bottom of the piping, beware using anything that could get sucked into the engine tho. Possibly find an endcap to put on it, I used a soft rubber endcap from a plumbing section in the local hardware store, although I admit to duct taping it closed temporarily for a day or two.

If you buy the really expensive ram air hood from DGM, it actualy has AEM ram air ducting that comes with it and leads to the air scoop.

Your best bet really, would be looking into importing the Autoexe carbon fiber ram air intake setup for our cars instead. It rams air into the car via a gap under the headlight. Pretty impressive looking too.

I dont see any gaps under my headlight.... I dont see how that one works (gap under the light)..... am i just retarded or something.

::translated from japanese, may not be fully comprehensible::
The normal cleaner box and is the layout which inhalation is done from front grille top, but capacity of the cleaner box to be small the intake pipe to be thin has become inhalation resistance with crank form. The ram air intake system straight adopts layout from the left side headlight reverse side to the throttle body. In addition to receive the influence of heat it has decreased also inhalation resistance difficult substantially by arranging the duct in the place where it is most distant from the engine inside the engine compartment. Installed capacity 7 PS and largest torque 0.8kg-m improvement.
::end translation::

what I make of it-

The stock intake gets air from the top grill, but the stock intake has a small opening, and loses force because of the piping it has to go through to the throttle body. The ram air intake grabs air from back of the left headlight and goes directly to the throttle body. The straight through design does not allow the air to heat up, as well as how it intakes farthest from the engine, in the engine compartment. gains were 7 PS and peak torque 0.8kg-m improvement. (don't know conversion)

looks good but it also looks like the stock tubing behind the mass air flow sensor. i was planning on making mine run down to the bottom grill. it will be a sacrafice with a slight change in direction but the pressure should stay constant in the intake but the cfm will be lower. but the pressure is what makes the power so hopefully i will get a good little gain. : )

HEY Equinox you suck man ... those headders look beautifulll OMG i love those .. ok those are a must now .. if you have any more picts of them id love to see them ..thanks bud

haha no I will not take anymore pics..

Probably because those are pictures off the japanese autoexe website, therefore, not my car, just the setup of the ramair on a JDM sport20

Hehe, I was wondering if he was gonna catch on to that one. ;)

Why those Autoexe stuff must be so expensive?

Header about 700 and ramair about 500??? :(

But that header does look very good :)

well it is a normal price for such stuff, it's just you are are comparing them to rice and crap. They mass produce crap and take lots of shortcuts, and usualy don't get as much gains as these products. Think of Autoexe as Tein, or JIC.... it's the real stuff, not fake crap.
