Mazda, Protege, ES 2.0L
hey yall whats up. I have a 01 Mazda Protege ES 2.0L. i have a few things done to it but i dont know whats next. Ive put a sst Header on a High flow cat and a cat back system. cold air intake, and an inline chip. Ill be doing the atx mtx swap in a few months. and im thinking about getting a turbo. i was told if i get a turbo not to change my cams or cam gears not to change my pistons but change my rods. i know nothing about 4cyl but how to put them together lol.... could i maybe get some advice on what to do

first, get rid of the "inline chip". it isn't doing anything but making your already dismal fuel economy worse.

next, if you are going to go through the process of an ATX to MTX swap, spend the little bit extra and get a decent used engine to build up and install at the same time. build the spare engine for boost, so that, when the time comes, its all ready for the turbo.

ok. i know nothing about turbos, fuel management, what else is there lol. and about the chip is there a way i can get different timing advance's then?

You need to READ and Understand A Lot before you start thinking about going Turbo.

Start On Line with the Garrett 101, 201, 301 Pages.

If you don't understand them, read "Internal Combustion Engines" and "Automotive Electronic Control"

Then Read "Maximum Boost", Then Read Garrett 101, 201, and 301 again...

Ask your questions and we will answer.

If what you are looking for is something like THIS

then you need MONEY and Time.

I dont plan on going turbo for awhile i wanna get my trans swapped and build my engine up and learn TONSSS more about 4cyl before i turbo it.... but if you dont mind me asking what else can i do to build up my motor if i cant change pistons cant change cam lifters valves or springs what else is there?

Making cars go faster is one thing...

Making them go VERY much faster is a different thing.

The engine has to be made to suit the goals.

I personally need a protege engine that can handle 400 WHP on a daily basis. I have built everything with that in mind. So technically, I need it to be Nuke Proof and then to run it below its maximum so that it will last a long time.

Everything int the motor is only as strong as the part that will let go. EG.. If you need the engine to hold 200 HP, then I say, forged rods is all you need to do. The stock pistons will be good to that goal. If you start to push 300 HP, then you need stuff like the Pistons, Aftermarket Head gaskets, Main bearings, Rod bearings... etc...

So now you have an engine that will suit the goals.... what about the transmission, the clutch, the drive shafts, the chassis and the brakes... You have to balance your build with the goals... if the goals change, then the build (All of it) has to be re-evaluated and altered to suit the new goals.

+1 do research on turbos then do research on our cars specificly for turbo (msp). I knew a little about turbos and after everything I learned a lot and that for right now with the money it takes its not for me. How ever with a good conservative tune its possible to have a reliable dd with 8psi with stock internals. But it also depends on the condition of your motor. And who ever told you not to change the cams valve springs etc is an idiot. There are cams made for a turbo fsde and valve springs to help with more power to keep everything in check. Another thing you NEED to get is the doc b oil pump look into that as well do your research any questions I can answer some I am not an expert by any means though.

ok thank you guys so much you've help me alot... my goal is no more than 300 whp. so with that i change pistons rods bearings cams valves and springs i think ill be good to go

Depending on the budget, you can build the motor and turbo at the same time.

normally people put a turbo on the car with the plan to in the future build the engine.

I believe that it backwards ( even thought that is how I did it )

Build the motor, then install a turbo.

Exactly! Unless you just want to boost no more than a stock MSP. It also deppends on your driving habbits. My protege has been boosted for almost 5 years (about 70k miles), and im running T3 - .60 trimm at 6psi on stock motor with zero issues. (Knock on wood) and im still on factory clutch at 170k miles right now. At the same rate, i know people that blew their stock MSP motors with no mods, because they did not know how to drive a boosted car. Once you boost your car, you have to be on top of your game as far as maintenance goes. Best of luck!!
