It absorbs the soundwaves? That would basically cut down on the available amount of sound not help the already established sound clear up. Again, I don't know much about the stuff but if I remember the diagram on the back correctly, the reason your body panels resonate is because *they* are absorbing the sound and vibrating because of it. The dynamat prevents the absorption and reflects the wave back to keep it going in the sound field and out of the body panels. Right?

absorbing would cause less vibration because the force is reduced, reflecting the sound would cause more vibration because when the force hits the panels, the panels will "reflect" the sound and therefore vibrate (sound = vibration of air)

When I installed my 2 12"RF subs, my P5 rattled like a baby's toy. Once I put some Fat Mat in the rear hatch area, not only did the rattles disappear, but my Mazdaspeed exhaust got a little less intrusive too.
I say yes, it's worth it for sound quality. (2thumbs)

To me all that he put in his car is a little overboard. But, then again, I think when my car went to the body shop they forgot to put the stuffing in the driver's door as it sounds tinny, and not woody like the other three doors.

So, maybe I need more?!?

DIZZAMN thats a lot of dynamat. that looks like at least a grand worth. hope it was worth the cash bro~

so far its been worth it -- it also really helped with some of the road noise we get from it being a hatch -- i bought the dynama online for around 770 -- i used 4 boxes of the extremebulk pack and 2 extreme liner packs --

it sounds really good -- but im not sure that the 12s are as loud as they can be -- i think the box might be small or because they fire up it dont carry as far -- but hi have them firing up so it wont shake the hatch to death

Bones, your install just became my favorite P5 system ever. That looks REAL nice, ans it's cool that you can still access your spare tire.


Here's my old favorite. Not so much all the s*** hanging from the hatch, but the way the subs are installed. Clean, out of the way, & still pretty good-sized.

i like that one too --- if the middle still comes up for the spare -- then IMO it would be perfect -- i really like having a spare -- 2 weeks after i got my car back i got a flat on my way home from work and was really happy to have my spare --

its taken me 5 years to save and by stuff to have for this install -- i bought the P5 for its looks and for the room -- it has backseats and a spot for a system
everything from the subs - amps - alarm - dynamat - Focals - frame - box - ect... Oh and dont forget LABOR ( i didnt do it myself )
Dont laugh and everything is new --- im looking around $6000 for all ---

It looks worth it though with the clean install and the access to the spare.

the above poster was correct. you don't want the sound to be reflected, that is bad, reflection of sound are bad, soft things absorb the sound, think of a movie theator, always notice how the walls are soft with carpet or curtains, this is so it will help absorb the sound so u don't have soundwaves bouncing all over and destroying an accurate image. ever panel has a resonation point, a certain frequency and volume with wich the panel will vibrate, the heavier the object the harder it is to cause vibration, this is what the term mass loading does, this is basically 80% of what dynamat does, it does absorb the sound as well and turn it in to heat but i truly think it does a better job of mass loading then it does of absorbing sound.


now wether its worth it is up to the user, if your wanting to have a fast car, adding pounds of sound dampening material may not be your thing. but i prettty much sound dampen every car i have. how much is up to you. on my sunfire i used around 350 sq. ft. going with 2-3 layers on pretty much every spot of the car. but then again these are cheap rattle trap cars to begin with. theres two ways of installing the stuff. first way is just to cover everyhthing completly. second way if you wanting to save money or weight, is to turn the sytem up and fins spots that rattle, then dampen that spot, then move onto the next spot, and so on and so on until its good enough for your tastes. as a general guidline i'd say use at least 100sq.ft. to get your money's worth. and check out alternatives as well.
