P5 tranny problems

hey,
I am new to the board. Anyone else have problems with the 5 speed. I need to have 3rd gear replaced and the sync. It sucks.

thanks, I guess I am not alone. this chews. Maybe some synthetic gear oil is in order oonce the parts are replaced.

As transmissions go, the P5's is not one of the more indestructable ones. Still, there are certain drivers who can destroy ANY manual transmission - It just doesn't take them as long to do it to the less robust ones ;)

I very much doubt synthetic oil is going to make any difference.

I agree with Don on the longevity issue. The operator's technique can literally make or break the transmission. I trashed the transaxle in my old Yenko by dropping the clutch at 5K with racing tires mounted. It twisted the input shaft of the tranny right in half. I took a furious ribbing from the car club about it until the mechanic called me and said the repair would take a few days longer than he planned. Seems he was testing his rebuild and twisted the new input shaft in half. Fortunately, he was a club member also.

On the synthetic issue, I used synthetic in all of my gear boxes since '83. I have seen much better shifting in every case. I am convinced that it helps with synchro life also, but I have no hard, factual evidence to prove it.

In my case I am getting a clunck or grinding from my 2-3 shift at any rev above 2500. It sounds and feels terrible. my parts are on order but there is a back order so I have to wait.
