The factory rack is indeed a Yakima Lockjaw. It'll hold a bike with a down tube up to 2 inches in diameter. No problem with my hybrid or my road bike.
The factory rack can be positioned so that it doesn't hit the hatch or the moonroof, open or closed. When I have a bike up there, though, the rear tire does hit the hatch. I could probably fix that by moving the rack farther forward, but I don't want to obstruct the view outta my moonroof.
yah the yakima mounts are plastic. i figure if the bikes are gonna go flyin, then the bikes are gonna go flyin. hehe I been know to drive about 90mph with both bikes on top but i'm cognisant on the fact that i've got stuff on the roof that's not gonna stop if I were to slam on my brakes. I also question the use of plastic mounts but if yakima says they're strong enough then who am i to argue bout it? the fact that yakima doesn't list the mounts in their catalog is just a ploy to get you to buy their whole setup. with my setup their is no clearance problem with the hatch & rear bike tires at all. there's about a 3 inch clearance.
The mounts I use are the horizontal mighty mounts. I don't know the part no. off hand, sorry. You'll know if they're the right ones for the stock bars just by looking at them. There's a big difference between the horizontal and vertical mounts.
Yeah, I had looked at picking up the Yakima horizontal mounts as well, as they state that they'll fit onto "rectangular" bars. How much did you pay for the mounts? I paid $29 for the 3 "Mazda" roof mounts and they're made of metal (cast aluminum?).
I can't imagine how the Yakima mounts and the "Mazda" mounts would be so different to cause the offset (i.e. rack-to-hatch clearances).
