P5 AT manual shift upshifting hestitation problem!!

misbehave

Recently my 03 P5 has reached 99K miles and my AT gear box starting to act weird.
I only drive it in manual shift mode (long story short, wife couldn't drive stick, couldn't get MT) and having been doing so all these years since I have the car without any problem.
Recently, the AT start having serious problem upshifting. It either takes forever to upshift or I will have to press the auto-stick 3 to 4 times to make it upshift or sometimes it still doesn't upshift but stuck in the original gear with RPM getting higher and higher.

However, if I drive it in full auto mode, everything seem just fine (except for the point that I can no longer up or down shift whenever I want to).

Is my AT failing and due for re-build? Please help.

The manual shift is done electronically meaning there is an electrical switch for the manual up shift and a separate one for the down shift. If everything is fine in automatic mode I would look at the up shift switch.

Do you know where I can locate the upshift switch?

i had the same issue with my p5 the switch is part of the whole gear selector unit. best i can tell it cannot be replaced without replacing the whole thing. if there is an easy solution i would like to hear it. mine still isnt resolved.

The factory wiring diagram shows the up switch is inside the "selector lever component". The factory workshop manual shows a selector lever inspection where you disconnect the battery and the connector on the selector lever component then check continuity for the different lever positions. If continuity is not as specified you should adjust the lever. http://www.mazdaspd.com/manual_files/05-18.pdf page 2 shows the lever adjustment for the non Sport AT, but it is the same for the Sport AT except step#7 "Shift the selector lever from the P position to 1 range (4AT)/M range (Sport AT), and make sure that there are no other components in that area to interfere with the lever."

Wow, thanks for the pdf file.
But I am not sure I am able to fix this myself or not.
I've heard from other place that I need to take my car to the deal to have the TCU reflashed.
Not sure what I should really do now.

I went to the local Mazda dealer today. They ask for $100 just for finding out what is wrong with it.
Should I go there? Or should I just find another transmission shop?

Not sure if you ever got yours squared away or not. I replaced the whole gear selector in mine recently assuming the manual switch had gone bad. It must have been the cause because now mine works perfectly in manual mode. Mazmart.com has a few for sale as of last week.

Great to hear that it works for you.
How much is one of those units and is it hard to replace it?
Mine is still having the manual shifting problem.

i was able to pick up a used one that was known to work for around 50. really the install is pretty simple. if you do decide to get one i can do a write up to help you thru the process. its honestly pretty damn simple.

Please do. I did disassemble that middle console part once, but a how-to will be very helpful and very much appreciated.
BTW, what is the part called and do you know where I can get it?

There are about 4 things on my P5 to-fix list right now, the shifter, the rear passenger side door lock actuator, and the timing belt+water pump.
Maybe I can at least fix 2 of those first this time.

What I did was left mine thats already in the car and just plugged into the new shifter. Really it's a cable, I think related to when the car is in park I'll have to double check. The hardest part to connect is the wire harness I always struggle with the clips lol.

BTW, did your transmission suffer exactly the same problem as mine does before you fix it?
I mean, not being able to upshift but works perfectly on its own when left at full auto mode.

yeah in full auto the car drove perfectly. in manual mode I couldnt do anything with it, it wouldnt upshift or downshift.

I'm the same way with my AT. I also drive it in manual mode only. I am noticing a bit of hesitation sometimes when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Please let me know how tough the switch was to change out because I may have to do that. If it involves dropping the tranny, I'll take it in to a shop. I don't have the facility for stuff like that.

Looks like I can do it at my home garage without really touching any part of the actual transmission unit.
I will know tomorrow though. The replacement part looks simple enough.
