I may be selling my ES and wanted to get some of you guys opnions on some of the vehicles I'm looking at to replace it. I'm still not sure yet as to if I am or not, but any input is appreciated.

1. 88-90 RX-7

2. 91-92 MR2

3. 97-98 240SX

I've never owned any of em, driven everything but the MR2 though. Mainly looking for something fairly inexpensive and reliable that has some decent aftermarket support. Damn if school ain't a B**ch

bE CAREFUL OF THE OLDER rX-7's, Most have been beat to s#$t and once they start having problems they continue to. That is not my opinion that is what I have observed with my friends rx-7's and my roommates and his dad's. A total of about 12 in all since I was 16. Only one of the 12 could actually be considered reliable. I think this is mainly due to the fact of the rotary engine and the lack of experienced technicians and parts availability to properly repair them. My roommate has 2 fried rotors up in his room as ummmmm"art" yeah that's the ticket. I will say though that the turbo II rx-7 are a blast to drive and they are pretty quick.

The 91-92 MR2 are awesome little cars but boy are they hard to find in good condition and when you do find one the owner thinks it is made of gold and wants an arm and leg for it. I have tried to buy a turbo 91-93 MR2 several times but gave up searching for them after looking at a ton. Aftermarket support is definately there and the things run well into the 100's of thousands of miles with no trouble. A frind has one that is a complete sleeper with about 300hp to the wheels and at last check had a little over 200k on the odo, not rebuilt, stock internals, pretty reliable, I think it is a 92. My mom used to have a 89 supercharged MR2 and that thing was a blast to drive. Would have been my first car but my step-dad totaled it.

As far as the 240s go I am somewhat at a loss as I really only know a couple of people with them and have had very little experience with those years. I do know that the front ends changed from one year to another. I think it was 97 that they had the sweet looking sylvia headlights and frontend and then changed in 98.(Somebody correct me if I am wrong) I have always been impressed with the cars as far as ones that I have seen at shows or in mags. I have heard of some serious numbers being put down. Plus you gotta love any car that has such a vast aftermarket and jdm selection to choose from.

I would love to suggest a VW Corrado VR6 but since I have owned one I know that to own and drive one you have to love the car whether it is just sitting still or howling WOT. Reliability was always an issue with that car as the miles got up there. I would suggest a 96-97 GTI VR6, You can pick them up for a pretty good price and they are little pocket rockets. The aftermarket is full of stuff for them and they handle like a dream(3 Wheeling baby) Repairs are kind of costly due to it being German but they are not that hard to work on for a decent do it yourselfer. Well good luck. Hate to lose you as one of the mazda brotheren on here as some of your posts have really helped me out and been really informative. I know how school goes though and wish you the best of luck. Let us know what you get. BTW check EBAY there are some pretty sweet cars on there in the range you are looking, meaning models and years and such.

I hold the 240 in high regard. The car before my P5 was a 96 240sx. Very reliable, never a problem. From everything I read you could get some serious HP out of the engine with the right mods. I never did anything to my engine thanks to having no money because of school.

I will say this, I liked it so much that if they still imported them when I bought my P5, I would have gotten a new one of those instead.

Thanks for the reply funwagon...i was kind of worried about the RX's the few i have driven have all been a little ragged. Just about everything down here is hard to find so thats not much of an issue...im kind of used to it.

If the cash is an issue aviod the RX, the 240's the best bet.

I would go with the MR2. Best in lasting quality and turbo my friend =). Or just get a nonturbo 92, swap for a JDM turbo engine, drop it with performance springs....you won't be disapointed. My best friend did this and he can outhandle my mp3.
Cheers

Most of the people I've talked to with RX-7s are autocrossers, and they all say that the RX-7 is one of the most reliable cars around..

Two of my friends have hooked up 240s, and they are some bitchin' little cars.. they look great and they're RWD and and and.. drifting!! Good stuff. That's what I'd pick.

Yeah drifting is fun...the protege is the first FWD vehicle i've had. If i count right i think that the pro makes 7 or 8. As a general rule i like RWD or AWD better, but i'll have to say that the pro is one of the few FWD cars you can drift in if you drive it right. RX-'s from what ive experienced around here aren't bad if you can find one that's been babied, basicly one with over 60K and more than one owner has been dogged to death and usually on the 2nd or 3rd motor. They're fairly inexpensive though compared to the other two choices i'd pick...usually you can pick one up for between 1500-3500 bucks depending on the year. I've got access to dealer auctions since i used to have a dealers license, so price isn't soooo much of a concern realiblity. If I had my way I'd do a 3rd gen RX but even at wholesale those are waaay out of budget.
