bE CAREFUL OF THE OLDER rX-7's, Most have been beat to s#$t and once they start having problems they continue to. That is not my opinion that is what I have observed with my friends rx-7's and my roommates and his dad's. A total of about 12 in all since I was 16. Only one of the 12 could actually be considered reliable. I think this is mainly due to the fact of the rotary engine and the lack of experienced technicians and parts availability to properly repair them. My roommate has 2 fried rotors up in his room as ummmmm"art" yeah that's the ticket. I will say though that the turbo II rx-7 are a blast to drive and they are pretty quick.
The 91-92 MR2 are awesome little cars but boy are they hard to find in good condition and when you do find one the owner thinks it is made of gold and wants an arm and leg for it. I have tried to buy a turbo 91-93 MR2 several times but gave up searching for them after looking at a ton. Aftermarket support is definately there and the things run well into the 100's of thousands of miles with no trouble. A frind has one that is a complete sleeper with about 300hp to the wheels and at last check had a little over 200k on the odo, not rebuilt, stock internals, pretty reliable, I think it is a 92. My mom used to have a 89 supercharged MR2 and that thing was a blast to drive. Would have been my first car but my step-dad totaled it.
As far as the 240s go I am somewhat at a loss as I really only know a couple of people with them and have had very little experience with those years. I do know that the front ends changed from one year to another. I think it was 97 that they had the sweet looking sylvia headlights and frontend and then changed in 98.(Somebody correct me if I am wrong) I have always been impressed with the cars as far as ones that I have seen at shows or in mags. I have heard of some serious numbers being put down. Plus you gotta love any car that has such a vast aftermarket and jdm selection to choose from.
I would love to suggest a VW Corrado VR6 but since I have owned one I know that to own and drive one you have to love the car whether it is just sitting still or howling WOT. Reliability was always an issue with that car as the miles got up there. I would suggest a 96-97 GTI VR6, You can pick them up for a pretty good price and they are little pocket rockets. The aftermarket is full of stuff for them and they handle like a dream(3 Wheeling baby) Repairs are kind of costly due to it being German but they are not that hard to work on for a decent do it yourselfer. Well good luck. Hate to lose you as one of the mazda brotheren on here as some of your posts have really helped me out and been really informative. I know how school goes though and wish you the best of luck. Let us know what you get. BTW check EBAY there are some pretty sweet cars on there in the range you are looking, meaning models and years and such.
