Opinion on Ebay rotors

My noticed that my front brakes are pulsing especially when I am exiting from the freeway. I have check RockAuto the price is great on the "Centric Premium Cryogenically Treated Rotor" but shipping to Canada is $88 for 2 rotors. So my search has lead me to Canadian sellers on Ebay. Being in Canada where they use salt on the road in winter I am interested in some sort of plating on the rotors for rust prevention. Has anyone installed rotors from these vendors and any comments on the quality of these rotors would be welcome.

I have eBay drilled and slotted on mine, and they work fine. The pads are a little suspect though. When I first installed them, they were fine after getting bedded in they squealed bad. I had to pull the pads off and sand the edge. After that they have been great. The plating is holding up well after one winter.

There's no advantage for slotted/drilled rotors on the street- they just reduce your friction surface area and give a place for cracks to start. Unless you absolutely have to have the "look" of the drilled and slotted rotors, it's cheaper (and you have better braking) with blanks. Centric is good stuff (same company as Stoptech, Powerslot), and the blanks show as $66USD on JC Whitney's web site.

I'd recommend cadmium "gold" plating on the rotors, it's better than zinc for rust prevention.

I don''t know why, but there are a lot of rotor/pads eBay sellers in Toronto. Is Toronto the rotor capital of Canada?

I have checked other Canadian sources including dealer, the price for a front rotor ranges from $27 to $200. So, the problem is what kind of rotors do these Ebay seller uses, $27 ones or something in between $27-$200.

We drive less than 8,000 Km per year and don't drive the car hard.

If you contact the sellers directly, they may offer coated blanks without slotting or drilling.

I contacted a seller silverstonemr* that stated they do this for $20 less than cross drilled. I haven't bought from them and am not recommending them, just that they do offer this option.

You can still transfer heat to the air through rust, it's still iron, just oxidized. If you have hats and vanes showing through your wheels, your hats are probably the wrong size, or your wheels aren't on your car. You could just paint those areas of the rotor with high temp brake caliper paint, then whatever's left in a swept area will get scrubbed off by the pads when you hit the brakes.

Hell, the Stoptechs on my S2000 get nice and rusty after a rain, and it's no big deal to me.

Hallelujah! This is a common theme that applies to EVERYTHING, especially today when everything is centered around cost cutting, yet we still try to save a buck up front only to pay $5 extra later...


Quality and composition of the raw metal is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> more important the coating. Look up DBA rotors (blanks) and you'd think they are crazy for charging so much for a slab of metal but the devil is in the details, which is the quality of the product (you cannot see or feel). That said, try to find a Canadian supplier who carries Centric Premiums (high carbon w/ E-coating). Looking at my rotors (still in box), I would safely guess Centric dips the whole rotor into the coating bath. E-coating is a process which ensure tight tolerance and though coverage of all nooks and crannies. They then cut out the portion of the rotor that mates with the brake pad’s surface area. Essentially everything else is fully coated/covered to prevent rust. I would also assume that the coating will make the rotor less likely to stick to the hub or rim. Nice haves but not essential.
